Georgia Power wants to raise your rates – again.  This week, the Georgia Public Service Commission will be hearing from consumer advocates groups who say that Georgia Power has had enough rate increases and that any more will place an undue burden on Georgia residents who are already dealing with increased prices across the board and inflation.  Georgia Power has already had their say in the matter and says that the current round of rate increase requests are due to surging demands of electric vehicles, but most consumer advocate groups don’t buy that argument and say that the state’s largest utility company has a history of overestimating demand as a way to increase rates on their customers.  Hearings on the matter will be held this Thursday and Friday and a vote will be taken by the Public Service Commission on April 16th.

Former President Jimmy Carter has another distinction to his name. Last week it was announced that the 99-year-old is the first U.S. president to be honored with an official White House Christmas ornament while still living. The ornament was unveiled on Wednesday of last week and is the latest in an annual series that the nonprofit White House Historical Association began issuing in 1981, the year Carter left office.

U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene says that each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives. The Artistic Discovery Contest is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation, as well as in our Congressional District.  The Artistic Discovery Contest is open to all high school students in our District. On Tuesday, February 20, 2024, Brice Restan Ware, a 43-yearold man from Summerville, Georgia, was convicted by a Chattooga County jury on charges of Trafficking Methamphetamine and Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute after a jury deliberated for less than twenty minutes.

The Chattooga County Registrars Office says that they have issued 52 absentee by mail ballots in the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary.  As of Monday, February 26th, 426 Chattooga County voters had cast ballots for the March 12, 2024 Presidential Preference Primary.  There have not been any provisional ballots.  See below for a comparison to previous years voting for the first week of advanced voting in Chattooga County:

The Chattooga County School System has named the 2024-2025 District-Wide Teacher of the Year.  This year, the honor goes to Erin Iler Smith.  Smith teaches fourth grade English-Language-Arts at Leroy Massey Elementary School.
