Mr. Nicholas Shea Crabtree age 49 of Trion, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 25, 2025.

Shea was born in Rome, Georgia on September 17, 1975, son of Jerry Crabtree and Monnette Gurley Crabtree. He attended the New Generation Church of God and was self employed in the Construction Industry. Shea was kind hearted and never missed an opportunity to help others when the opportunity presented itself. He was an avid fisherman and could always be found near his favorite fishing hole. Shea was preceded in death by his grandparents; Patty W. and Jim Stoker and Henry and Hazel Crabtree.

Shea is survived by his children, Dexter “Cody” Crabtree, Jayden Jones, Laurel(Dallas) Thomas and Daisy Bishop; parents, Jerry and Monnette Crabtree; sister, Brisha(Chris) Young; grandchildren, Bryleigh Crabtree, Malachi Crabtree and Ryder Thomas; and a number of additional extended family.

Funeral Services for Shea will be held Monday, February 3, 2025 at 4:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Winston officiating.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Mr. Stephen Wesley Payton, age 65, of Summerville, GA, died Friday, January 31, 2025, at Advent Health Gordon.

Mr. Payton was born October 30, 1959, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Lewis Payton and Mittie Lee Allen Payton. He loved fishing, boating, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Payton was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Hennon; brothers, Mark Payton, Malcolm Payton, and Wayne Payton.

Survivors include his daughter, Jennifer (Jackie) Burrage; brothers, Andy (Nae Nae) Payton, Marvin Payton, and Tim Payton; sisters, Sheila Payton Hayslip, Janice Payton (Jimmy) Sink, Kathy Payton (Alan) Marbutt, and Sharron Payton Gabriel; and 4 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 3, 2025, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held privately in Garrett Cemetery.

Mr. Travis Eugene Bailey, age 28 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, January 24, 2025 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Travis was born in Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia on March 27, 1996, son of Carrie Annette Kirby Stoker and Stacy Charles Thrasher. He was a graduate of Chattooga High School and was employed with Wright Sanitation. Travis was an avid fisherman, loved to hunt and a strong follower of UGA Football. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Annie Kay and Lewis White.

Travis is survived by his children, Jayce Bailey, Aiden Hampton and Declan Travis Bailey; mother and step-father, Carrie and Kevin Stoker; father and step-mother, Stacy and Amy Thrasher; brothers, Dillon Thrasher, Austin Earwood, Jonah Coker, Kevin Bailey and Dylan Mathis; sisters, Chelsey Bailey, Brooklyn Carroll, Kayla Gordy and Julee Serrano; his best friend, Dewayne Ledbetter; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

Mrs. Mary Ellen Martin, born August 9, 1941, entered into rest surrounded by her loved ones. She was the beloved daughter of Vera Ruth Crye and was raised with love by her mother and step-father, Lewis Crye.

A devoted and cherished member of the Chattooga County School System, Mary Ellen served as a lunchroom worker for 30 years, touching countless lives with her kindness, warmth, and dedication. Her presence brought joy to the students and staff she served, and she will always be remembered for her loving spirit and unwavering generosity. She was a devoted member of Alpine Community Church, where her faith and kindness shone brightly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Martin; her mother, Vera Ruth Crye; and step-father, Lewis Crye.
Mary Ellen is survived by her sons, Mike (Kanissa) Martin, Jeff Martin; her grandchildren, C.J. (Gracie) Martin, Jacie (Dillon) Woody, Ellie Martin, John Michael Martin, and Austin Martin; great-grandchildren, Wren and Asher Martin.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday, February 1, 2025, at Alpine Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Pledger officiating. Active pallbearers will be John Michael Martin, C.J. Mr. Green was born December 8, 1967, in Rome, GA, son of Lillian Yarborough Green and the late Donald Green.

Mrs. Annie Kate Thompson, age 81, of Summerville, GA, died Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Advent Health Redmond.

Mrs. Thompson was born May 2, 1943, in Eagle, WV, daughter of the late Miles Haynes, Sr. and Lethia Swaggardy Haynes. She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and was retired from Berry College. She had also previously been employed with Summerville Glove Mill until its closure.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda Thompson; brother, Miles Haynes, Jr.; sisters, Willie Kate Olden and Annie Bell Anderson.

Survivors include her fiancé, Frank Morton; son, Joseph Thompson; daughter, Phyllis Young; grandchildren, Cortez Thompson, Breshawn Thompson, Taler Young, Alethia Young, Asheleigh Young, Sherrod Young, Syed Young; great-grandchildren, Juliana Thompson, Levangham Thompson, Jr., and Makaiven Thompson; sister-in-law, Dinah Kate Hixon Haynes; son-in-law, Steve Young; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Richard Rodney “Pappy” DeKarske, Obit (M)

Mr. Richard Rodney “Pappy” DeKarske, age 78, of Lyerly, GA, died Saturday, January 25, 2025, at his residence.

Mr. DeKarske was born August 19, 1946, in Detroit, MI, son of the late Richard Harry DeKarske and Bernice Mary Niewzalek. He was a member of Pentecostal Power Ministries, and prior to his retirement, was employed with Mohawk. Mr. DeKarske was a veteran of the United States Army where he was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. While he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he donated 200 cc’s of blood to a 14-year-old girl with a heart condition to save her life during an operation.

In addition to his parents, Mr. DeKarske was preceded in death by nieces, Michelle Harwood and Debbie DeKarske Harris.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Ann Johnson DeKarske; son, Richard (Maricela) DeKarske; daughter, Rhonda (Vernon) White; brother, David (Dorothy) DeKarske; grandchildren, Xavier DeKarske, Kristian Mobbs, Kadence White; great-grandchildren, Ryker Cavin and Rayla Cavin.

Mrs. Chris Taylor, age 60 of Lyerly, Georgia passed away Sunday, January 26, 2025 at a Rome hospital.

Chris was born in Rome, Georgia on February 27, 1964, daughter of the late Thomas Glenn Westbrook and Mildred Lee Landers Westbrook. She was a member of the River in Centre, Alabama and was retired from Mohawk Industries. Chris never met a stranger, and took in many children over the years. She enjoyed church activites and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Chris was preceded in death by a sister, Dinky Warren and a brother, Thomas “Butch” Westbrook.

Chris is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Slater and Amanda(Kevin) Rhinehart; brother, David(Cindy) Westbrook; grandchildren, Hunter Rhinehart, Wyatt Roberts, Alexis(Kirby) Slater, Seth(Shanrail) Slater, Chase(Sadie) Slater and Shaylia(Bryan) Black; great grandchildren, Mason Slater, Colton Slater, Weston Flatt and Ronin Flatt; and a number of nieces and nephews.

MR. ARTHUR DAVID CRABTREE, age 78, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Friday morning, January 24, 2025, at his residence. He was born on July 13, 1946, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a son of the late George Gideon and Mae Elizabeth Smith Crabtree. Mr. Crabtree was self employed in flooring and refrigeration business and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, the late Alfred Crabtree, several other sisters and brothers also passed away earlier.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Crabtree; daughters and sons-in-law, Sonya Ricketts, Stephanie (Mike) O’Neal, and Sabrina (Chad) Walden; grandchildren, Brandon Cody, Jacob (Kinsey) O’Neal, Jaxon O’Neal, Cate Walden, Jenna O’Neal, and Emma Walden; great granddaughter, Lily Kate O’Neal; brother, Bud Crabtree; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.
