Mrs. Elma Lee McCollum Johnston, age 90, passed away April 17, 2011, at her residence in Summerville, GA.
Mrs. Johnston was born October 8, 1920, in the Gore Community, Chattooga County, GA. Her parents were the late Carl Mason McCollum and Mrs. Maude Menta McClain McCollum. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Judson Glenn Johnston, January 10, 2004, to whom she was married 64 years, a twin sister Mrs. Thelma Janette McCollum Brooks, passed away April 1, 2009 her brother-in-law Lt. Col. Rayford L. Brooks, passed away February 3, 2000 and a niece Marilyn Lee Brooks Marks, passed away August 31, 1981.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Sue Ellen Johnston Houston and her husband David Osman Houston, Summerville, GA; three grandchildren, Mrs. Jennifer Houston Mangan and her husband, Scott Mangan, Summerville, GA, Carlton David Houston and his wife Ellyn Houston, Summerville, GA, Susan Houston Geurin and her husband, Jeffery Geurin, Grovetown, GA. She also had six great-grandsons in whom she delighted, Amrin Zachery Houston, Samuel Andrew Mangan, Elijah John Mangan, David Michael Mangan, Matthew Conner Geurin, and Harrison Jacob Geurin. She is also survived by a sister, Louise McCollum, Summerville, GA, a niece, Mrs. Dianne Brooks Hanchey and her husband Dr. James Murrell Hanchey, Frieswood, TX and Stephen Kyle Brooks and wife, Dianne Padilly Brooks, Cypress, TX; six great nieces and nephews.
In her employment days, she served as an instructor at the Georgia Glove company and recently she commented on how she loved the ladies with whom she worked.
Graveside services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 3:30 pm at Greenhills Memory Gardens with Rev. Jerry Mahan officiating.
Mrs. Johnston will lie-in-state on Tuesday, April 2011 where the family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. Pallbearers are Carlton Houston, Jeffrey Geurin, Scott Mangan, Gordon McCollum, Robert Floyd, Wes Love, and Fred Johnston.
Her family will remember her for her unselfish love of her family and friends. She wanted her family around her, and delighted in seeing them gathered around her table, as they did almost every Sunday, for a meal she had prepared as long as she was physically able to do so. She will indeed be missed sorely.
Mrs. Sue Hayes, age 74, of Calhoun. Died Tuesday morning April 12th in Gordon Hospital, following several weeks of declining health.
Sue was born March 22, 1937 in Mt. Aire, Georgia. Daughter of the late Ralph C. and Agnes Cone Scott. She was a teacher with the Trion City School System for 42 years retiring as the systems Curriculum Director. Her love of education led her to Shorter College and Georgia Northwestern where she was a instructor after her retirement. Sue was a member of the Calhoun Church of Christ, the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and P.A.G.E. of Georgia.
Besides her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers; Carter and Hugh Scott. Two sisters; Ester Meadows and Theo Phillips.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Don Hayes. One daughter, Suzanne Smith and her husband Nathan all of Calhoun. One brother, John Scott and his wife Jo of Griffin. Two sisters; Olive Voltair and her husband George of Clearwater, Fl., and Ann Budd and her husband Dan of Rock Springs, Wo.. One granddaughter, Kate Hutchinson of Calhoun.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday April 15th at 2pm from the Calhoun Church of Christ. With Pastor Barry Gilreath and Dr. Richard Compton officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery. Music will be arranged by Nathan Smith and Maresha Bagwell.
Pallbearer serving include her nephews; John Meadows, Mike Meadows, Scott Meadows, Jeff Bennett, Kevin Hayes, Steve Hayes, Chris Hayes, Robert Hayes, and Neil Hayes.
The family will receive friends Friday morning from 10am until 12:30 at which time Mrs. Hayes will be taken to the church to lie in state from 1pm until the funeral hour.

A native of Chattooga County she was born in Berryton, Georgia on May 26, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Hines and Lizzie Kinsey Warren. Mrs. Kellett attended Horizon Baptist Fellowship and was retired from Harriett-Henderson Mills and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Kellett, Sr., daughter Susan Marie Kellett, a son, Ralph Kellett, Jr., and brothers Jack and Archie Warren.
Surviving are daughter, Jody Kellett (Will) Maples, daughter-in-law Aleta Kellett; grandchildren Kyle Kellett, Blake Weaver, Heather Spann, and Erin and Will Maples III. Great-grandhchildren, Hayden and Taylor Eagle, Gracie Farmer, Jack and Payton Weaver, Kylor Kellett, Kayla and Kelsi Spann.; brother- Brimp Warren; sisters – Ruth Treadaway and Elizabeth Powell – several neices and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 10th at 2 PM from Horizon Baptist Fellowship with Rev. Jerry Mann, Rev. Greg King and Rev. Jack Gillespie officiating interment in Greenhills Memory Garden. Active pallbearers will be Blake Weaver, Kyle Kellett, Will Maples, Archie Warren, Doug Stephens and Hayden Eagle.
Visitation will be Saturday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home.
Mrs. Betty Jean Dean Norton, age 78 of Thomas Road, Trion, GA passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2011 in Redmond Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Norton was born June 10, 1932 in Adairsville, GA. She was retired from Bigelow Sanford-Lyerly Plant, was a member of the Belmont Baptist Church, and the 25 Elite of Mohawk Industries.
Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her first husband, Elgin Lee Norton; father, Rev. W. H. Dean; mother, Laura Thomas Dean; brothers, Jerry Dean and Thomas "Sonny" Dean; and second husband, Wayne Bradley.
Mrs. Norton is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ronnie Stephens of Summerville, GA, son and fiance, Gary Norton and Dianne Jolly of Rome, GA, daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Rod Powell of Menlo, GA; sisters, Cecelia "Ce-Ce" Laney of Trion, GA and Debbie Weaver of Summerville, GA; sister-in-law, Laura Dean of Summerville, GA; step-mother, Helen Dean of Summerville, GA; sister-in-law, Eloise Norton of Summerville, GA; brother-in-law, A. L. MRS. LOIS P. BEAM, age 82, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Monday afternoon at her residence. A native of DeKalb County, Alabama She was born to the late Jack Starling and Maggie Tankersly Thomas on May 10, 1928.
