Ms. Mary Margaret Fletcher Obit (M)

Mary Margaret Fletcher, age 92, passed away Friday February 24, 2017, in Pruitt Health Care Center.  Mary was born April 6, 1924, in Hickman County, TN, the sixth child of Sam and Linnie Chaney.

She worked for Oakridge National Labratories and Bell Telephone,  before marring Glenn Wesley Fletcher  in the 1950’s and moving to northwest Georgia.  She became an excellent cook and gardener.  Her roast beef Sunday dinners with fresh garden vegetables were great.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, an infant daughter, her parents, and her brothers and a sister.  She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ.

Survivors include her son Don Fletcher and his wife, Gray Fletcher, grandson, Wes Fletcher, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m. Sunday February 26, 2017, from the  Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Hugh Glaze officiating with burial in the West Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Fletcher will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Sunday February 26, 2017, from  1:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Mrs. Norma Jean Smith Obit (M)

Mrs. Norma Jean Smith, age 82 of Summerville, GA, formerly of Macon, GA passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at her residence.  
 Mrs. Smith was born August 25, 1934, in Frenchburg, KY, the daughter of the late Lona and Annie Back Brown.  She was retired from Georgia Pacific, she was elected 1976, the First Female Union President of Georgia Pacific Corp. She loved gardening, planting flowers, riding her golf cart and playing the guitar. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her husband; Franklin D. Smith, daughter; Deborah L. Smith, and grandson; Lucus A. Smith.
Survivors children; Marcus A. Smith, Macon, GA, Rebecca Sockabasin, Robyn M. Smith, Princeton, ME, Sue and Ron Rowland, Summerville, GA, grandchildren; Sam Sockabasin, Chad Sockabasin, Heidi Sockabasin, and Jessica Cilley, step-grandchildren; Chip Rowland, Angela Rowland, and Keith Rowland, 6 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-great-grandchildren, sister; Marjorie Rudder, of Fairview, TN, and companions; “Pretty Boy” and “Stormy”.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be at 5:00 PM Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Mason Funeral Home chapel with Ron Rowland and Rev. Tom Russell Officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 3:00 until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association in honor of Mrs. Smith.

Ms. Vickie Ann Koonce Williams, Obit. (M)

Ms. Vickie Ann Koonce Williams, age 75, of LaFayette, GA, died, Monday February 20, 2017, at The Hospice of Chattanooga Care Center in Chattanooga, TN.
Ms. Williams was born February 16, 1941, in Berryton, GA, daughter of the late David and Ruth Nelson Koonce.  She was a member of the Berryton Church of God, and prior to her retirement, was employed with Mount Vernon Mills.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, David Allen “Little David” Koonce.
Ms. Williams is survived by her son, Scotty Williams; daughters, Tammy Cannon, Trina Williams, and Kelly Williams Scott; grandchildren, Chaz Hayes, Dustin Williams, Cortney Williams, Dima Cannon, Iger Cannon, Kristine Cannon, and Wendy Taylor; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Ms. Williams will be held at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, February 23, 2017, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stanley Koonce officiating.  Honorary pallbearers will be Angel Armstrong, Phyllis Tucker, Peggy Tucker, Marzell Stewart, and the staff at Hospice of Chattanooga.

Donald “Don” Lesley Sullivan (Wilson)

Donald “Don” Lesley Sullivan, 76, of Ringgold, Georgia, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, February 18, 2017 at his residence. A native of Maitland, Florida, he has lived in the North Georgia area for the past 37 years and moved from Orlando, Florida. Don was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, and a former employee of All-Tel where he worked for 22 years. He led music at various churches, and was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church where he was over the Senior Adult Ministry. He is preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Pearl Estelle Banks Sullivan; sisters, Joan Hayes, Louise Johnson, and Myra Jackson; and five brothers, Earnest, Rufus, Melvin, Clem and Frank Sullivan. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Beverleigh Anne Hoover Sullivan of Ringgold, GA.; five children, Donald (Melanie) Gregory Sullivan of Summerville, GA., Melonie Dawn Sullivan Kidd of Tupelo, MS., Beth (Tony) Bateman of Ringgold, GA., John (Rhonda) Sterner of Summerville, GA and Tim (Missy) Sterner of Jacksonville, FL.; nine grandchildren, six great granddaughters, several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 4:00 P.M. Sunday February 19, 2017 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Loveless, Bro. Leroy Wilson and Rev. Michael Kirby officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 P.M. at the funeral home. MR. HOMER EDWARD LEE STAMPER (W)

MR. HOMER EDWARD LEE STAMPER, – Age 70, – Of Summerville, Georgia, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2017.  He was born on December 15, 1946 to the late Emma Bell Stamper in the Gore Community, was retired from Shaw Industries, and was a life member of Prospect Baptist Church.   He was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Ruth Young, Mary Ann Stamper, brother-in-law, James Perry Young.

 

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Martha Jean Covington Stamper; son, Reginald Lee Stamper, Sr., godson, Burt (Wanda) Lawrence; daughters, Marcie (Thomas) Stubbs, and Lynn Covington; seventeen grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two special grandchildren, Marrissa Stubbs, and Belle Anderson; two sisters, Helen (Lee Edward) Powell, Frances Evans; brothers, Jeff David (Pauline) Stamper, James (Rosie Lee) Stamper; brother-in-law, Roger Lee Covington; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

 

Funeral Service will be Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 1:00 P. M. at Prospect Baptist Church, 2306 West Armuchee Road, LaFayette, Georgia with Pastor Scott Copeland and Rev. James Washington, Jr. as Eulogist.  The family will receive friends at the church on Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 P. Mrs. Vera Brown Hughes, Obit. (C)

Mrs. Vera Brown Hughes, age 89, of Trion, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

Mrs. Hughes was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 9, 1927, daughter of the late Clifford Brown and Etta Hartline Brown.  She was an avid Braves Fan and loved to fish, cook, play cards and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.  She was a member of the Spring Creek Baptist Church and prior to retirement was a machine operator in several of the local glove mills.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Hughes and Larry Hughes; brothers, Wayne “Booger” Brown and Willard Brown; sister, Monk Bowman; an infant sister; step-son, David Hughes; and a step-grandson, Randy Hughes.

 

Mrs. Hughes is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Vicki Hughes; daughter, Andra Hughes; stepson and daughter-in-law, Micky and Joyce Hughes; three grandchildren, Jason Hughes, Justin Hughes and Amanda Bartlett; 9 great grandchildren; special friend, Betty Brinkley and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hughes will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 at 4:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Winston Renfroe, Mr. Phil McGuire and Mr. Michael Lee Stancil officiating.  Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Jessie Thomas Howell, Jr Incomplete Obit (M)

Mr. Jessie Thomas Howell, Jr., age 61, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, February 12, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Howell was born March 11, 1955, in Clinton, NC, son of the late Jessie Thomas Howell, Sr. and Catherine Turner Howell.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mill.

Mr. Howell is survived by his son, Jonathan Howell;  grandchildren, Evan Howell, Alexus Howell, and Tressi Howell; and a special friend, Phyllis Parish Elem.

Mr. Stephen Wayne Jones (Lane)

Stephen Wayne Jones, 66, of Summerville, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2016.

Mr. Jones was a native of Rossville, Georgia and was born May 7, 1950 to his parents Lelton E. and Opal M. Jones and has lived in the Summerville, Georgia area for the past 5 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two tours in Vietnam from 1970 until 1972. He also received the Bronze Star, as well as, other accommodations during his military service. He was most recently employed with Case Construction and earlier with Tennessee American Water. Mr. Jones enjoyed hunting and fishing and will truly be missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lelton E. and Opal M. Jones, and his brother, Dana Lamar Jones.

Survivors include his sons, Stephen “Stoney” Jones, David (Amanda) Jones and Andrew Micah Jones, uncle, Clayton (Wanda) Mathews, aunt, Joyce J. Fields, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a nephew, Anthony Brian Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 in the South Crest Chapel with Reverend Ron Ragon officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

 Mrs. Margaret Ellen Langford, age 80 of Summerville, GA passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at her residence.

Mrs. Langford was born March 5, 1936 in Rockwood, TN to the late James Reed, Sr. and Charity Roark Reed. She was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Clyde Langford, and siblings; William Reed, Thomas Reed, Charles Reed, Glenn Reed, James “Buddy” Reed, Mary “Baryl” Marshall, and Katherine Smith.

Mrs. Langford is survived by her sons; Ronald Langford and Rodney Langford, daughters; Kimberly (Charles) Westmoreland and Debra Conway, grandchildren; Lakeisha (Joshua) Swenford, Kristie (David) Love-Smith, Kassie (Dan) Love-Carter, Kara (Derrick) Shepard, Jennifer Westmoreland, Kallie Love, and Joshua (Suzy) Westmoreland, great-grandchildren; Leann Bridges, Brandon Swenford, Kaitlyn Swenford, Lydia Chandler, Brookelyn Williams, Ansley Westmoreland, Kyle Westmoreland, Ivan Westmoreland, Waverly Carter, and Addison Shepard, and sister-in-laws; Christine Reed, Lois Reed, and Eskridge Langford.

MRS. BETTY W. DAWSON updated (ER)

MRS. BETTY W. DAWSON, age 85,of Gore-Subligna Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday evening at her residence.  She was born in Rome, Georgia on June 4, 1931 to the late John and Vivian Housch Choate .  She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, the late George Floyd Dawson on January 31, 2014.

        Surviving are daughter, Kay (Lawrence) Broome; granddaughter, Lauren Cady; grandson, John (Becky) Broome all of Summerville; great grandchildren, Clair Cady and Madilynn Broome; sister, Glenda Bullard; brother, John Henry Choate; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

        Funeral service will be held Monday, February 13th, at 2:00 P.M. from Graveside in Greenhills Memory Garden with Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiating.  Active Pallbearers, Gary Gordon, Mark Gordon, Terry Howell, and Joe Reed.  The Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, Monday from noon until the hour of service.
