Mr. Ronald Andrew Payton Obit (M)

Mr. Ronald Andrew Payton, age 80, of Summerville, GA, passed away Saturday May 10, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Payton was born January 22, 1934, in Menlo, GA,  the son of the late Robert Andrew and Ethel Mustoe Payton. Mr. Payton and his wife where owners and operators of the Payton Pharmacy for over 38 years.  He was a member of Summerville 1st Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, received a B/S in Pharmacy  from the  University of Georgia, past member of the Lion’s Club, served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 8 years.  Other than his parents he was preceded in death by a son Ronny Payton.

Survivors include his wife, Mary M. Payton, son, Gary Payton, mother-in-law Frances Hood, grandchildren, Garrett Payton, Walker Payton, Hannah Payton, sisters, Mildred Hall, Laura Dawson, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jimmy & Carol Hood, Carolyn & Ron Thomas, Bobby & Jackie Hood, Dale & Mary Hood, Doris Hood Smith, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday May 12, 2014, from the Summerville 1st Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Mason and Rev. Doyle Waters officiating with interment in the Greenhills Memory Garden.  Active pallbearers, David Parker, Dereck Parker, Charles Cooper, Paul Meredith, Jim Parker, Ken McCarley.  Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Summerville 1st Baptist  Church Seekers Class.

Mr. Payton will be in state at the Summerville 1st Baptist Church and the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. Monday until the service hour.

Ms. Billie Faye Crain Obit

MS. BILLIE FAYE CRAIN, age 83, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, May 11, 2014, in the local nursing home. A native of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, She was born to the late Horace and Clara Jones Brewer on August 25, 1930. Ms. Crain retired nursing after many years with the former Chattooga County Hospital and Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by a son, the late Bruce Crain, and sisters, Vauda Whaley, Betty Burney, and Robbie Brewer.

Surviving are daughter & son-in-law, Brenda and Edward Hammitt of Summerville; son & daughter-in-law, Douglas and Terri Crain of Gaylesville, AL.; grandchildren-Chera Allison, Holly Ivester, Tracy Wood, Rhonda Blalock, Kevin Crain, and Benay Pearsey; 15 Great Grandchildren; 1 Greaty Great Grandchild; several Nieces and Nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:00 noon until 2 P.M. with a Private funeral service to follow, with Pastor Gary Howell officiating; interment in Greenhills Memory Gardens. The Family request no flowers and suggest contributions to the Ami Cemetery Upkeep Fund.

Mr. Willie Curtis Smith, of Summerville, Ga., transitioned on May 7, 2014. Service will be Monday, May 12, 2014 at 3 pm at Pond Springs AME Church in Holland, Ga..The family will receive friends at the church on Monday, May 12, 2014 from 2 pm until the funeral hour. Interment will follow the service at Pond Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Brooksie Nell Purcell Vines, age 87, of Trion, Georgia died on May 9,2014. 
 
Survived by son, Carlton and wife, Amber Vines; sister, Sandra Purcell Sprayberry, and several Nieces and Nephews. She was a member of the Trion First Presbyterian Church (inactive) and a Peace Corps Volunteer. At Her request, she was cremated and a private service will be held a later date.

MRS. MINNIE KEEN LOCKLEAR ALLMOND, age 84, of Tate Road-Trion,Georgia, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at her residence, following an extended illness. Mrs. Allmond, a lifetime resident of Chattooga County, was born in the Teloga Community on May 1, 1930 to the late Elgin and Bertie Simmons Keen. She was a member of the Beersheba Presbyterian Church, a 1948 graduate of Menlo High School, and was retired from the spinning department of Riegel Textile Corporation. Mrs. Allmon was preceded in death by former husband the late Ben Locklear, brother-the late Elbert Keen, granddaughter-the late Amy Elizabeth Farrar, son-in-law-the late Tarry Dupree, and brother-in-law-the late Bill Shamblin. Surviving are Her husbabd-Sam Allmond; daughters & spouse, Gail and Greg Cook, Edith Dendy, and Barbara Dupree; step children & spouse-DeWayne & Ruby Allmond, Dewey Allmond, and Tracy Michelle Allmond; sisters & brothers-in-law-Jo Shamblin, Evelyn Willigham & Gene Day, Shelby & Paul Ward, Mary & Harold Floyd; brother & sisters-in-law-David & Marlene Keen and Charlotte Keen; eight Grandchildren; six Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews. Mrs. Mary Thornhill Marks Obit (M)

MARY THORNHILL MARKS of Summerville, Ga., passed away May 5,

2014 at her home. Ms. Marks was born July 29, 1917 in Bridgeton, N.J. She married her husband of 68 years, James Harry Marks of Summerville, in

1945 when she moved with her husband to Chattooga County. She worked as a secretary at the Georgia Rug Mill before becoming the office manager for her husband's car business, Marks Auto Sales. She attended the Presbyterian Church of Summerville where she served as a children's Sunday School Teacher, and she was also a leader of the Girl Scout Troop of Chattooga County. She later attended the Trion (Ga.) Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Ms. Marks was a member of the Summerville Garden Club, and spent much of her spare time on her interest in flowers, vegetable gardens and other plant life.

 

She is survived by her husband, James Harry Marks, sons James W. Marks and partner Nicholas C. Apostol, Paul Thornhill Marks and daughter-in-law Susan Mathis Marks, daughter Nancy Marion-Crawford and son-in-law Charles Francis Marion-Crawford and grandsons Peter Marion-Crawford and Harry Marion-Crawford. A son, John Harry Marks, died earlier.

 

The family wishes to express a special thanks to Mary Martin and Ruth Starr for their devotion. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Heyman Hospice Care of Rome, Ga. to whom the family is deeply indebted for their care.

Mr. Bradley Douglas Merrell Obit (C)

Mr. Bradley Douglas Merrell, age 39, of Summerville, Georgia 
passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Floyd Medical Center.

Mr. Merrell was born in Clarksville, Tennessee on November 4,
1974, son of James Norman Merrell and Linda Reeves Ballenger.
 He was a 1992 graduate of Chattooga High School, attended the
 Art Institute of Atlanta, the University of Florida at Panama City Beach,
 and was self employed as a professional Chef. Mr. Merrell was preceded 
in death by his maternal grandfather, Dr. Seaborn Reeves, and 
his paternal grandparents, Norman and Margie Merrell of Rome.

Mr. Merrell is survived by his father and step-mother, James and
Denise Merrell of Canton, OH; mother and step-father, Linda and 
Ben Ballenger of Summerville; sister, Laura Ferriera of Chicago; half 
sisters, Angela Merrell of Dublin, OH and Kathryn Schwieterman of Centerville, 
OH; step-sisters, Katie Pasque of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Katherine Hahn 
of Canton, OH; step-brother, Robert Ballenger of Philadelphia; grandmother, 
Faye Reeves of Rome; a special friend, Kim Teems Moore, and a number of 
additional relatives and friends.

Private memorial services will be held Saturday, May 10, 2014.

Mr. Wilburn Allen Chick Hutchins Obit (M)

Mr. Wilburn Allen “Chick” Hutchins, age 90, of Summerville, GA, passed away Monday May 5, 2014, at his residence.

 

Mr. Hutchins was born September 19, 1923, in Chattooga County, GA, the son of the

late Charles Wilmont Hutchins and Alice Lowe Hamby Hutchins.  He was a life long

farmer, owning and operating Hutchins Farms.  He was a member of the Menlo Lions

Club, and a Master Mason for over 60 years, a member of Chattooga County Young

Farmers, and a Boy Scout Leader.  Mr. Hutchins was a veteran of the United States

Navy, C-Bees, having served his country in WWII.  Other than his parents, he was

preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Harper Hutchins; brothers, J. C., Tom, Jack, and Ernest Hutchins; sisters, Charlene Rhinehart, Ruth Nuckolls, Rose Kennedy, and

Dixie Clayton; and a granddaughter, Sara Jane Hunter.

 

Survivors include son, Mike Hutchins and wife, Genela Hutchins; daughters, Ann Hutchins, Mary Hutchins Firsdon and husband, Kevin Firsdon; brother, Gene

Hutchins, and wife, Wanda Hutchins; sister, Barbara Alford; grandchildren and

spouses, Amy and Jeremy Hartline, Ethan and Angela Hutchins, Lori and Johnny

Brady, Kasey and Tyler Wilson; great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Hutchins, Jacob and

Taylor Hutchins, Seth Wilson, Blayne Wilson, and Price Wilson.

 

Private graveside and interment services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Thursday,

May 8, 2014 at Hutchins Family Cemetery.  Bro. Steve Nance will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Rick Green, Tyler Wilson, Dan Hunter, Johnny Brady,

Tony Blalock, and Brandon Lindsey.

 

Mr. Hutchins will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive

friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p. m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014.

 

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the charity of your

choice or to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
