Mr. Charles Douglas Stephens Obit (M)

Mr. Charles Douglas Stephens, age 72, of Cloudland, GA, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Stephens was born March 1, 1942, in Summerville, GA, son of the late G. W. Stephens and Catherine Magdaline Nelson Stephens.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served four years active duty and two years in the Navy Reserves after being honorably discharged from the Navy.  He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and husband.  He worked as a millwright for 40 years at Georgia Kraft (Inland) in Rome, GA, where he also served on the Charity Committee.  He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and trapper.

The most special times of his life were spent teaching his grandchildren to fish.  He worked actively at Mount Olive Church in Cloudland, GA where he enjoyed helping with Bible Study.  He treated everyone he met with dignity and respect.  He loved and served his Creator and his Savior with everything he had.  He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.

Mr. Stephens is survived by his wife, Barbara Schrader Stephens; son Joseph Wheeler Stephens and his wife Samantha Stephens; daughter, Charlene Annette Stephens-Koonce; brother, Stephen Bruce Stephens and his wife Ruth Stephens; sister, Vesta Helton and her husband Harold Helton; grandchildren, Stephen Koonce, William Koonce, Calvin Koonce, Landon Stephens, and Evan Stephens; great-grandchildren, Isabell Koonce, Abigail Koonce, Kayson Koonce, Keegan Koonce, Emarie Saine, and Londyn Kate Jones.  Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Stephens will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 15, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Bishop officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lyerly Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Mike Smith, Scott Treadaway, Brent Williamson, Randy Bohannon, Greg Koonce, and Bart Bryant.  Honorary pallbearers will be Harold Helton, Joe Cox, Jr. Moon, Ronnie Morris, Allan King, Sonny Reynolds, Grady Schrader, Leroy Sweatman, Pete Peppers, and Charles Tudor.

Mr. Stephens will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday.

Mrs. Virginia Ruth Stover Obit (C)

Mrs. Virginia Ruth Stover, age 80, of Lyerly, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Stover was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 12, 1933, daughter of the late O.L. “Joe” Gilmer and Clara Mills Gilmer. She was a 1952 graduate of Chattooga High School, an active lifelong member of the Calvary Baptist Church, and was a loving wife and mother. Mrs. Stover was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Amanda Stover, and a brother, Billy Joe Gilmer.

Mrs. Stover is survived by her husband of 59 years, Virgel Stover; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Angela Stover of Rome; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jeff Tarvin of Huntsville, AL; brother, Emory Gilmer; sisters, Rachel Robertson of Murfreesboro, TN and Wylene Gilmer of Summerville; two grandchildren, Jordan Stover and Emily Tarvin, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Stover will be held on her birthday, Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Decker and Rev. Doyle Waters officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Studdard officiating.

Pallbearers will be Greg Robertson, Phil Robertson, Andy Matthews and David Messer.

Mrs. Stover will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Ms. Mable Hunt McClain, of 247 Pinetree Cir., Griffin, GA, formerly of Calhoun, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014 at her residence. Ms. McClain was born in Gordon County on August 24, 1952, daughter of Gilbert Hunt and Mariah Wilkin.

Mr. Charles Howard Marshall, age 65, of Gaylesville, AL died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Marshall was born June 16, 1948 in Trion, GA, the son of Mildred June Wade Marshall and the late John Howard Marshall.  He was retired from Mohawk Industries.  Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Frankie Lane Marshall.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Hartline Marshall; mother, Mildred June Wade Marshall; daughters and son-in-law, Kim and Michael Baker, and Angie Harrell; step-son, Caleb Millican; step-daughter and husband, Shelena and Jessie Chisolm; brother and sister-in-law, Steve and Ginger Marshall; sisters and brother-in-law, Darlene Smith, Gail and Dennis Moseley; grandchildren, Xavier DeKarske, Katrina Harrell, Abby Baker, Dylan Baker, Gracie Chisolm, and Carlie Chisolm.

Mrs. Kathleen Ann Perry, age 58, of Gaylesville, AL died Monday, April 7, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Perry was born January 9, 1956 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late Marvin Ball and Barbara Rocksberry Ball.  She was a homemaker.  Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Adams. Survivors include her daughters, Kimberly Perry and Leslie Adams; 6 Brothers; 3 Sisters; grandchildren, Nicole Vincent, Morgan Vincent, Lillyan Adams, and Weston Morris; and a great grandchild, Zaryah Turner. Memorial services for Mrs. Perry will be held at 1:00 p. m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley Dalton officiating. Mr. William “Bill” Albert Day Obit (M)

Mr. William “Bill” Albert Day, age 72, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, GA.

Mr. Day was born July 20, 1941, in Tahlequah, OK, the son of the late Glen Vernon Day and Elda Day.  He attended Chilocco Indian School in Oklahoma.  He was a Dental Technician First Class with the United States Navy and retired with several honors and medals; National Defense Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Five Good Conduct Awards.  He also retired as a CPL Jailor from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department.  He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a resident at the Suites at Oakview in Summerville, GA.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jewell Lee Day; son, William Daniel Day; and sister, Sarah “Trudy” Veasey.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Gregory Wheeler of Summerville, GA; grandson, Ethan Wheeler of Summerville, GA; sister, LaVerne Mcguire of Ada, OK; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 P.M. Thursday, April 10, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin Woods and Mr. Louis Campbell officiating.  Burial will be in the Eucha Indian Cemetery, Eucha, OK, at a later date.

Mr. Olin Emory Ford, JR, age 56, of Summerville, GA died Friday, April 4, 2014, at his residence.

 Mr. Ford was born October 16, 1957 in Trion, GA, the son of Doris Elizabeth Brown Ford and the late, Olin Emory Ford, SR.  He was formerly employed with Galey and Lord Manufacturing.  Other than his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Dartey Jacob Ford.

 Survivors include his wife, Beverly Ford; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Michelle Ford, Trace Cordell, John Dylan and Rachel Ford; mother, Doris Elizabeth Ford; brothers, Daniel & C. C. Ford and Jeff and Terri Ford; sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Dennis Gregory; and 9 Grandchildren.

 Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Howell and Rev. Mr. Alfred Earl Croy Obit (C)

Mr. Alfred Earl Croy, age 79 of Summerville, GA passed away Saturday

April 5, 2014 at the Oak View Nursing & Rehab Center.  Mr.  Croy was born

June 18, 1934 in Trion, GA.  He was retired from Mohawk Industries as a Coater

and was a member of the Mohawk Elite 25 Year Club.  Mr. Croy was a Veteran

of the United States Navy during the Korean War.  He was a member, former

deacon and Sunday School Teacher of the Dry Valley Baptist Church.  Mr. Croy

was a good man, loving father, & grandfather. 

 

Mr. Croy was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Lester and Maybell Bailey

Croy; and several brothers & sisters.

 

Mr. Croy is survived by his daughters, Patsy Hall, Judy (Sammy) Tapp, Wanda

(Leonard) Elrod, and Edna Hines; brothers, Herschel (Glenda) Croy, Jimmy

(Janice)  Croy, Robert (Diane) Croy, Tommy McGuire, and Billy McGuire;

 sisters, Maggie Fox, Ethel (Ted) Deberry, and Bobbie Goss; 11 grandchildren,

 several great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews.

 

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. from the

Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Rickey Biddle and Rev. Robert

Dugan Brown officiating.  Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gary Wayne Talley, age 64, of Summerville, GA died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at his home.

Mr. Talley was born June 25, 1949 in Centre, AL the son of the late Arnold Talley and Dorothy Crane Talley.  He was a member of Midway Baptist Church.  Mr. Talley was a self-employed car  dealer.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Donnie Talley.

Mr. Talley is survived by his wife, Shelby Jean Talley; son, Kevin Battles; daughters and sons-in-law, April and Tracy Trammell, Brandy and Steven Merritt; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Jennifer Talley; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Pat Benson; and 8 Grandchildren.

Mr. Randall Thomas Smith, age 62 of Summerville died Monday, March 31, 2014 at Kennestone Hospital. 

Mr. Smith was born August 22, 1951 in Menlo, GA, the son of the late Thomas Samuel Smith and Alice Ruth Middleton Smith. He was a carpenter and a member of the Church of God. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Meadows.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Smith; daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly and Jason Meadows, Kerri and Waylon Bartlett; sisters, Pat Ledbetter, Judy Roan, and Sheila Ellis; brothers, Michael Smith, Donnie Smith, and Ricky Smith; grandchildren, Noah Meadows, Jordan Weems, Brianna Weems, and Brittany Bartlett.
