Mr. Horace David Hunter, age 91, of Summerville, GA died Monday, August 19, 2013 2013 at Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Hunter was born July 10, 1922 in Summerville, GA the son of the late Sam

Hunter and Azor Mason Hunter.  He was retired from Summerville Cotton Mill.

Mr. Hunter was a member of Pennville Church of Christ.  Other than his parents,

he was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Hix Hunter; second wife, Wilma

Lively Hunter; son, David Hunter; step-son, Jackie Lively; sisters, Annie Mae Ingram,

Lucille Rich, Bessie Butler, Margaret Hunter, Geneva Blackmon, Roberta Fowler and Ruby Ledford; brothers, Fred Hunter, J. D. Hunter, Sam W. Hunter, Carl Hunter, and Oscar Hunter.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Brenda Hunter, Larry and

Diane Hunter; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sid Henderson; step-daughters and husbands, Melody and Dennis Howard, Betty Faye and Steve Nelson; step-daughter, Marie Houge; sisters, Roxie Jane King, and Mildred Edgworth; 7 Grandchildren; and 15 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Mason Funeral

Home Chapel, with Min. Robbie Eversole and Rev. Terry Hampton officiating. Burial

will follow in Summerville Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Adam Hampton, Don

Hennon, Eddie Henderson, Marty Hampton, Terry Hampton, Brandon Hampton,

Donnie Hicks, and Sammi Hampton.  Honorary pallbearers will be Conner Henderson,

Timothy Edgworth, Neal Edgworth, and the Staff and Nurses at Oakview Nursing

and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Hunter will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends

from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Tuesday, August 20, 2013.

   Mrs. Alma Ruth Abernathy, age 80 of Summerville, GA passed away Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Mrs. Abernathy was born December 27, 1932 in Durant, Oklahoma.  She was the first nurse employed at the Summerville Hospital where she was an L.P.N. for 42 years.  Mrs. Abernathy was a member of the Summerville Church of God. 

   Mrs. Abernathy was preceded in death by husband, William Clinton Abernathy; daughter, Pamela Suzanne Abernathy; father and mother, John Franklin Scoggins and Pearl Mae West Scoggins; and sisters, Mary  Scoggins and Ida Barton.

   Mrs. Abernathy is survived by son, Frankie Abernathy of Summerville, GA; granddaughters, April and her husband, Daniel Ash of Centre, AL and Melissa and her husband, Aaron Simpson of Trion, GA; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Annie Hale of Summerville, GA; spiritual daughters, Brenda Coffey of Rock Springs, GA and Elaine Webb of Fairfield, Idaho; several nieces and nephews.

   Funeral services will be conducted Monday, August 19, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. from the Chapel of the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Hutchins, Rev. Terry Taylor, and Rev. Joseph Hardin officiating.  Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery. 

   Visitation for Mrs. Alma Ruth Abernathy will be Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Thelma Ruth Cooper Sprayberry, 93, of 55 Stockade Road (formerly of Allen Street), Summerville, Ga., passed away on Aug. 16, 2013.

A native of Summerville, Mrs. Sprayberry was born on July 1, 1920, the only child of Charles Obed Cooper and Annie Lee Bridges Cooper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Edward Sprayberry, in 1989, and her elder son, Charles Edward (Eddy) Sprayberry, in 2012.

She is survived by her son Phillip Kent Sprayberry of Clifton, N.J.; her daughter-in-law, Melinda Graham Sprayberry of Decatur, Ala.; several cousins, nieces and nephews, great- and great-great-nieces and -nephews; and many friends.

Mrs. Sprayberry was born in a house on Montgomery Street in South Summerville. She graduated from Summerville High School in 1937 and spoke fondly of playing on the girls’ basketball team. 

She was married to Julius Edward Sprayberry of Hall’s Valley on Sept. 7, 1941, in Walker County, and the couple built a house on Allen Street in the Bellah subdivision, where she lived for 70 years. She lived her entire life in Summerville except for two years in Boise, Idaho, where her husband was stationed during World War II. 

In the late 1930s and much of the 1940s, Mrs. Sprayberry was a certified beautician at Perry’s Beauty Shop, Myrtle’s Beauty Shop, Turner’s Beauty Shop and in Boise, but she chose to stay home when the couple had children. She was an active and faithful member of the Church of Christ and attended the South Commerce Street congregation since it was formed in 1941.

Mrs. Sprayberry was a loving, caring lady whose most fulfilling work took place in and around the home, where she was concerned with the needs of her family and others. She was also a caregiver to numerous ladies at church and in the community. She was especially known for her baking, sewing and love of flowers. Through the years, she won many ribbons at the Chattooga County Fair in needlecrafts, baking and ceramics. Hers was a life of service: to her God, her family, her church and those in need. Even after moving into assisted living at the Suites at Oakview, she continued to send greeting cards, as she was able, to recognize birthdays and to cheer those who were ill and comfort those who had lost loved ones.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Green Hills Memory Gardens with Ken Parker and Edwin Parks officiating. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Honorary pallbearers will be men from the South Commerce Street Church of Christ. Active pallbearers will be Tony Johnson, Earl Kinsey, Frank Sentell, Wilburn Shepherd, Benny Sprayberry and Neal Warren.

Visitation will be Monday evening at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m.

   Mr. Nicklos Jethro Pettyjohn, Jr. age 91 of Summerville, GA passed away Friday, August 16, 2013 at his residence.  Mr. Pettyjohn was born on March 10, 1922 in Walker County, GA.

He was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation and was a member of the Pennville Church of Christ.  Mr. Pettyjohn was a Veteran of the United States Army.

   Mr. Pettyjohn was preceded in death by his father and mother, Nicklos Jethro Pettyjohn, Sr. and Julie Jones Pettyjohn; sisters, Annie Rape, Lula Ford, Lou Margie Dawson, Almeda Pettyjohn, and Gussie Stansell; and brothers, Earl Pettyjohn and Lewis Pettyjohn.

   Mr. Pettyjohn is survived by his wife, Frances E. Vineyard Pettyjohn of Summerville, GA; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.

   Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, August 18, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the Pennville Church of Christ with Minister Frank Ford and Noey Vineyard officiating.  Interment will follow in Macedonia Cemetery.

MR. JESSIE LEE FOUNTAIN, age 72, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, August 12, 2013. Born in Chattooga County, on March 28, 1941, a son of the late Jesse Eugene Fountain and Joann Ledford Hunter, Mr. Fountain was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills and was Church of God Holiness by faith. He was preceded in death by three sisters: Sue Youngblood, Sybil Miller and Charlotte McGuire. Mr. Fountain is survived by his wife Geneva Siffles Fountain; Daughters and sons-in-law: Darlene and Phillip Bruce and Patricia and Troy Tapp; Son and daughter-in-law Tony Lee, Sr. and Penny Fountain, all of Summerville. Brother: Junior Hunter, Six Grandchildren, Two Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 15, 2013 at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Minister Blake Ferguson officiating, entombment in Green Hills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Grandsons: Richard Tapp, Ricky Tapp, Tony Fountain, Jr., Brandon Fountain, Jason Brown and David Tapp. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Gladys Inez Dempsey, age 90 , formerly of Trion passed away Monday at Wood Dale Health and Rehabilitation in Dalton.  Mrs. Dempsey was born September 2nd, 1922 in Trion and was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation Packing Department, she was a Baptist by faith. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, George Robert and Pluma Hawthorne Woods, sisters Anice Payton, Myrtle Moncrief, and Eva Bell Jordan and brothers Bill and Guy Woods,   Mrs. Dempsey is survived by sons and daughters in law John and Jan Dempsey and William and Diane Dempsey of Dalton, granddaughter, Cheryle Marfilius of Dallas , grand son Paul A. MRS. VERDIE LEE CALLAN MORRIS, born October 6, 1920, an honorable daughter of Robert T. and Rosie Lee Mobbs Callan and loving wife of Jessie Glenn Morris passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at her home in the Pennville Community of Summerville, Georgia. Verdie was a child of God and member of Pennville First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. She retired from Best Manufacturing Company of Menlo. Not only was she a loving wife and mother, but an accomplished seamstress, fine crafter, an artist, carver, gardener and homemaker, a beloved friend and neighbor who will be greatly missed. Verdie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister, Beulah Callan Hawkins, three brothers: Roy A. Callan, Fred Callan and Robert Callan, Jr., a Great Grandson Easton Barrett Morris and son-in-law Utah Rice. She is survived by four children: J. V. Morris (Betty), Martha Ann Morris Jones (Ben), Betty Lee Morris Rice and Joyce Sue Morris Hix (Jimmy), nine Grandchildren, eleven Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services will be held Friday, August 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Dempsey officiating, interment in Green Hills Memorial Gardens. Active Pallbearers will be Grandsons and Great Grandsons. Mrs. Shirley Inez Baugh, age 59, of Summerville, GA died Thursday, August

8, 2013 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Baugh was born January 9, 1954 in Pikeville, TN, the daughter of the late

Millard and Willa Brock Womack.  She was employed with the Collinsville

Nursing Home.  Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her

first husband, Don Autry, SR.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Baugh; son, Don Autry, JR; daughters and

husbands, Lynette and Robert Smith, Tammy and Michael Hughes; step-

daughters, Anita Patterson and Wendy Stone; brothers, Glenn Womack and

Jackie Womack; sisters, Kathy Grigsby and Margie Cooper; 15 Grandchildren;

and 3 Great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Mason

Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Hobbs and Rev. Charles Bishop

officiating.  Burial will follow in Subligna Cemetery.  Active pallbearers are
