Mrs. Katherine Thomas Obit

Mrs. Katherine Virginia Thomas, age 76 of Summerville, passed away Saturday September 18, 2010 at her residence.

Mrs. Thomas was born April 30, 1934 in Trion, Georgia the daughter of the late Chester Herdis and Anna Elizabeth Rice Skelton.  Mrs. Thomas was a member of the Pennville Alliance Church and was owner and operator of Katherine Beauty Shop and preceded in death by her husband Bill Ross Thomas.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Ronnie Ray, Suzane and Randy Pauley, Grandson, Shane Allen Pauley, Granddaughter, Kaitlin Pauley, brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Diane Skelton, Herb and Cindy Skelton, niece Tammie Greene.

Funeral service will be held 6 PM Saturday, September 18, 2010 from the Pennville Alliance Church with Rev. Carlos Martines officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers: Shane Pauley, Chris Ray, Jerry Skelton, Jr. and John Skelton.  Honorary Pallbearers: Kay Clark, Cindy Ledford, Lousie Stewart, Liz Meadows, Holly Cothran, Marie Dendy, Ladies of Pennville Alliance Church and all former customers of Katherine Beauty Shop.

Mrs. Thomas will lie in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will recieve friends from 3;30 until 5:30 Saturday September 18, 2010.

Ricky Thomas Croy obit

Mr. Ricky Thomas Croy, age 62, of Summerville, GA died Friday, September 17, 2010 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Croy was born June 23, 1948, the son of the late George Thomas and Virginia Fowler Croy. He was retired from Image Carpet. Mr. Croy was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sheila Diane Croy.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Gail Odom Croy; children, Jeremy and Julie Croy and Hannah and Eddie Millican; brother and sister-in-law, Ronnie and Sadie Croy; grandchildren, Mikinzie, Ligntnin, Rees, Noah, Sarah, Olivia, and Zoey.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howard Odom, Rev. Mike Odom, and Rev. Frank McCrickard officiating. Interment services will be held at Greenhills Cemetery with Rev. Robert Brown officiating. Active pallbearers will be Nathan Odom, Matt Odom, Steve Odom, Brandon Croy, Allen Martin, and Jay Lowery. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of Trinity Baptist Church.

Mr. Croy will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p. m. Saturday, September 18, 2010

 

James Walter (Jimmy) Duff, Jr

James Walter (Jimmy) Duff, Jr. , passed away at Floyd Medical Center on Tuesday, September 14, following five months of illness.

He was born in Knoxville, TN, on July 30, 1928, the son of the late James A and Anna Bess Duff. He graduated in 1946 from Alcoa High School in Alcoa, TN.  Mr. Duff served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict.

For over 50 years, Jimmy served the community as owner and operator of Duff’s Flowers and Fifts, selling the business and retiring in 1997.  He was an active member and Deacon of First Presbyterian Church here in Summerville.  A charter member, Mr. Duff was instrumental in the founding of the church in 1982, and the building construction in 1988.

Surviving are sisters, Ada Margaret Duff Elrod of Summerville and Jean Duff Goebel and husband, Wales Goebel of Birmingham, AL; nephews Bill Elrod, Fayetteville, GA; Mike Goebel, Steve Goebel and Stan Goebel of Birming ham; Great nephews Brandon Elrod, Rone, GA; Justin Goebel, Jordan Goebel, Birmingham, AL. and Dallas Goebel, Louisville, KY; great niece, Caitlyn Goebel of Atlanta, GA.

Services wil be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Summerville, at 3:00pm, Friday, September 17.  Officiating will be Rev. Greg King and Rev. Wales Goebel.  Pallbearers will be nephews and great- Nephews, and friend and care-giver Wayne Ashley.  Mr. Duff will be buried in Green Hills Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the services.

Mr.Toney “Bible Man” Campbell Obit

Mr. Toney Campbell "The Bible Man" age 75 of Summerville passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Campbell was born in Dawson Springs, KY on Februray 8, 1935.  Hew as employed for 45 years as a Construction Laborer for Local #561 in Evansville, Indiana, for 9 years as welder for the Illinois Central Railroa, for 4 years minstering in campgrounds in Kentucky, for 7 years ministering at Hays State Prison and giving out Bibles.  He was on The Master’s Hands TV program on Channel 6 and gave out Bibles at Trade Day.  He was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church.

Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his father and mother, Benjamin and Rosa Bell Hancock Campbell; son, Christopher Lee Campbell; daughter Kathy Lynn Barton; grandson, Heath Curtis Barton; granddaughter, Samantha Gail Campbell; brothers, Edward Campbell and Wayne Campbell.

Survivors are his wife of 48 years, Brenda Joyce Baueum Campbell of Summerville; son and daughter-in-law, Gary Anthony and Noi Campbell of Bosnia; daughters and sons-in-law, Dodie and W.C. Greeson of Calhoun, GA and Toni and Gary Mendez of Puerto Rico, and Tracy and Ken Murill of Chapeh Hill, N.C.  Grandchildren: Melissa Maye, Jody Ryan, Sierra Lynn, Clete, Cigi, Colton, Louis, Jeffery, Steven, Benjamin, Dainel, Brandon, Brock, Bree, Madison and Blakely.  Great grandchildren:Makala, Matthew, Peyton, Adalyne Christ-a-belle, Isaiah, Nicolaus, Aiden and Trislynn; brother- Ben Campbell of Dawson Springs, KY and sister Jo Ann Oakes of Bowling Green, KY.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 5 PM at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home chapel with Chaplain Darrell Ellis, Rev. Jimmy Weaver, and Bro. Jimmy Wilder officiating. Interment will be at the Piney Grove Cemetery in Dawson Springs, KY.

Mr. Campbell will lie in state Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home where the family will recieve friends from 1-5 PM.

Pallbearers will be Steve Johnson, Clete Greeson, Colton Greeson, Brock Campbell, Brandon Campbell and Jody Bryan.

Varnadoe Obit

Mr. Roger Gene Varnadoe, age 74, of Mentone, AL, passed away Sunday September 5, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Varnadoe was born August 25, 1936, in Lumber City, GA, the son of the late Paul Alexander and Neomi Allen Varnadoe. He was a retired truck driver, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Varnadoe was preceded in death by brothers, Simmie Varnadoe, and Robert Varnadoe; and a sister, Mary Lillie Varnadoe.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Varnadoe, son, Kevin Roger Varnadoe, daughter Kim Justina Green, brothers, Paul A. Varnadoe, Jr., Jeff Varnadoe, Morris Varnadoe; sisters, Myrtle Jones, Josie Goddard, Carrie Mae Butler; 3 grandchildren, Cody Green (US Navy), Chance Green (USAF), and Devin Bennett; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Varnadoe will be held Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Mason Funeral Home with Bro. Lance Kinzer and Bro. Forrest Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in the Cloudland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Mildred Mitchell Obituary

Mrs. Mildred Frances Carr Mitchell age 94 of Summerville, passed away Sunday September 5th at her residence.

Funeral services will be 11:AM Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Perry Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Jimmy Wilborn officiating; burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from  6 until 8:PM Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers include Danny Arp, W.J. Watwood, Bud Love, Bill Broyles, Junior Barnes and Robert Brown.

Survivors include daughters, Sue Barosay, Ann (Bill) Broyles and Naomi (Junior) Barnes all of Summerville; son-in-law, Robert Brown of Lyerly; daughter-in-law, Betty Mitchell of Lyerly; sisters, Mae Parris of Jamestown and Margaret Jennings of New Hope; 6 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 10 step great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, 2 step great great grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

Mrs. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, James Clifford Mitchell, Sr., a son, Pete Mitchell, daughters Nell Mitchell and Beatrice Brown and grandsons, Boyd C. & Loyd D. Mitchell.

Mrs Mitchell was a native of Floyd County, the daughter of  the late Arnold and Myrtle Atkins Carr and was a member of Mt. Zion Independent Church.

Mrs. Joyce Debra Battles

Mrs. Joyce Debra Battles, age 56 of Trion, Georgia passed away on September 2, 2010 at her residence.

Mrs. Battles was born in Trion, Georgia on December 21, 1953, daughter of Charles Mitchell Hines and Pauline Estelle Elliot Hines. She was of the Baptist Faith and prior to retirement, was employed with Mohawk Industries as a Lab Assistant.

Mrs. Battles is survived by her husband, Randall Battles; sons, Randall Estes Battles, Jr., William Michael Battles and Charles Timothy Battles; parents, Charles Mitchell and Pauline Estelle Hines; brother, Randall Eugene Hines; sister, Peggy Lynn Hines; grandchildren, Annie Michelle Battles, William Mitchell Battles, Kayle Leann Battles and Alanna Paige Battles; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Battles will be held Sunday, September 5, 2010 at 3:00 P.M. in the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bradley Battles and Rev. David Dutton officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Ms. Sara Alexander Phillips

MS. SARA ALEXANDER PHILLIPS, age 75, of Mahan Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday (September 4, 2010) at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born to the late Thomas Earl and Belle Talbert Alexander on April 17, 1935. Ms. Phillips was a member of North Summerville Baptist Church and a Master Cosmetologist. For many years She coached girls softball, little league baseball, and basketball. She was preceded in death by a son the late James Stanley Perkins.

Surviving are daughters-Beth Bryant and Philana Robinson both of Summerville; sons and daughter-in-law-Bart & April Bryant of Cloudland and Kane Phillips of Rome; brother-Ernest Alexander of Lyerly; grandchildren-Heath Drennan, Kassie Smith, Jade Robinson, and Mallory Phillips; great grandchildren-Destinee Drennan and Jackson Drennan; special friends-Barry Williams, Maradith Budd, and Allen Neal; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Memorial service will be held Tuesday (September 7th) at 7:00 P.M. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Harris and Rev. Tom Russell officiating. The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 until the service hour at the Funeral Home.
