Mr. Ronald Gene Spraggins, age 75, of Menlo, GA, died Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Atrium Health Floyd.

Mr. Spraggins was born October 18, 1947, in Trion, GA, son of the late Andrew and Imogene Gertrude Johnson Spraggins. He was retired from Mohawk.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joel Dewayne Whittle; brother, William “Butch” Spraggins; and sister, Martha Spraggins.

Survivors include his children, Ronald Lamar Spraggins, Rhonda Michelle Hall, and Becky Eaton; sisters, Andrea Spraggins and Carolyn Spraggins; 6 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, January 7, 2022, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rodney Blalock officiating.

Mr. Spraggins will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Saturday.

Susan Carol Durham, Obit (C)

Mrs. Susan Carol Durham, age 66 of Trion, passed away Monday, January 2, 2023 at a Rome Hospital.

Susan was born in Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia on October 2, 1956, daughter of the late Harold C. “Billy” Durham and Sara Jo Spence Durham. She was a member of the New Beginnings Baptist Church and was retired from Color Spectrum. She enjoyed shopping, working in the yard, dancing and being around water, especially water skiing. In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Ball; and a brother, Barry Watson.

Susan is survived by her sons, LaDon Roach and Matt Beech; brother and sister-in-law, Sonny and Cheryl Durham; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and DeWayne Allmond; grandchildren, Randi Wills, Ryan Roach, Reece Roach and Lorianna Beech; great grandchildren, Gatlin Wills, Bane Wills and Paxton Roach; special friends, Eve Johnson and Jean Rollins; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Susan will be held Friday, January 6, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Pastor Ken Johnson and Rev. Chris Nixon officiating. Interment will follow in the Lafayette City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include John Martin, Ryan Roach, Reece Roach, Kevin Wills, David Martin and Tony White.

Mr. Herbert Juan Hughes, Obit (M)

Mr. Herbert Juan Hughes, age 83, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, January 1, 2023, at his residence.
Mr. Hughes was born March 9, 1939, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Alfred Lee and Dorothy Mae Alred Hughes.  He was Baptist by faith, and prior to his retirement, had been employed with Mount Vernon Mills.  He was also a veteran of the United States Army.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the American Legion and the Chattooga County Saddle Club.  He was also a member of the Quarter Century Club at Mount Vernon Mills where he had 45 total years of service.  He was known for his tractor work throughout the county and the many years of service he provided to families including tilling and plowing gardens, bush hogging, and yard work.  He spent many years traveling to mule pulls with friends and his brother, Hugh Don.  He owned many pairs of mules and wagons throughout his life and went on rides with the Saddle Club and his family.  He grew vegetable gardens each summer and loved raising chickens, collecting antiques, and working in his yard.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his brother, Hugh Don Hughes.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Hughes; daughters, Rhonda (Phil) Williams, Ericka (Stacy) Young; grandchildren, Jarrod and Logan Broome, Rhett and Erin Tucker; uncle and aunt, Eugene and Ursula Alred.
Memorial services for Mr. Hughes will be held at 4:30 P.M. Thursday, January 5, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. David Alred officiating.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Mason Funeral Home from 3:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Thursday.

Mr. Terry W. Woody, Obit (M)

Mr. Terry W. Woody age 72 of Summerville, GA passed away Thursday, December 29, 2022 at a Rome Hospital.
Mr. Terry was born May 20, 1950 in Ringgold, GA to the late Olin and Estelle Wilson Woody. He was retired from 5 Star Vending and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He was an accomplished musician and enjoyed deer hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his sisters, Brenda Packard, Joyce Spivey, and Glenda Woody.
Survivors include his wife of over 42 years, Charlotte Green Woody; children, Olin Woody, Chris Blanks, and Lisa Hampton; brothers, Leon Woody, Tim (Tammy) Woody, and Kenneth “Bo” Woody; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mr. Woody will take place at 2:00 Saturday, December 31 at the chapel of Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Mickey Skates officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Berryton Cemetery with Bobby Nixon, Chris Nixon, Ronnie Croy, Brandon Croy, Chad Green, and Terry Green serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Teems and Wayne Blansit.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 noon until the service hour at the funeral home.

Mr. Johnathan Dewayne Shropshire, age 31, of Summerville, GA, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 28, 2022.
Mr. Shropshire was born July 13, 1991, in Rome, GA, son of Lester Neil Shropshire and Hope Renee McGuire Shropshire.  He was a 2009 graduate of Chattooga High School.
Mr. Shropshire was preceded in death by a brother, Corey Thompson; grandparents, Paula and Houston Marks, Elizabeth and Maxwell Meadows, Jimmy and Lucille Shropshire, Billy McGuire, and Danny Timmons.
Survivors include his parents, Neil and Hope Shropshire; a brother, Jeffery Blackmon; grandmother, Linda McGuire; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, December 31, 2022, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Nixon officiating.

Mrs. Rebecca Sue “Becky” Martin, Obit (C)

Mrs. Rebecca Sue “Becky” Martin, age 79 of the Dry Valley Community in Summerville, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at a Rome Hospital.

Mrs. Martin was born in Menlo, Georgia on October 26, 1943, daughter of the late Phillip Baker Willingham and Myrtle Ruth Hawkins Willingham.  She was a member of the Cloudland Presbyterian Church and was a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star and was a Shrine Lady for many years. Mrs. Martin was retired from the Department of Driver Services, where she worked as a license examiner.

Mrs. Martin is survived by a daughter, Kim Martin; son, Kevin Martin; grandchildren, Ally Martin and Cady(Josh) Shields; a great grandchild, Parker Shields; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment services for Mrs. Martin will be held Friday, December 30, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. in the Cloudland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Mr. Dewayne Tinney officiating.

Pallbearers will include Rodney Barksdale, Jerry Eller, Steve McGill, Mike Bright, Tommy Stoner and Josh Shields.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Pete Denson and Gary McConnell.

Mrs. Cathy Annette McGuire Millsap, Obit (M)

Mrs. Cathy Annette McGuire Millsap, age 55, of Summerville, GA, died Monday, December 26, 2022, at her home.
Mrs. Millsap was born July 16, 1967, in Summerville, GA, daughter of the late James Lee and Charlotte Julie Hunter McGuire.  She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.  Mrs. Millsap loved her grandchildren and enjoyed reading her Bible.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Goodenough.
Survivors include her companion, Henry Millsap; children, Chris (Janet) Brady, Corey (Ashley) Millsap, Caitlyn (Colton) Brown; brother, Merle (Mary) McGuire; sister, Donna McGuire; 7 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Mrs. Penny Wade Broadrick, Obit (Wallis-Wilbanks)

Mrs. Penny Wade Broadrick, age 61, of LaFayette passed away Friday, December 23, 2022, at CHI Memorial hospital in Chattanooga.

Born June 5, 1961, in Trion, Georgia to the late Edith and Marvin Wade, she grew up in a very close family in the Dry Valley Community and was of the Baptist faith. Along the way she made many friends and held many jobs including several years at Blue Bird Corporation and the Walker County Sheriff’s Department. She later pursued her LPN license becoming a private nurse. She loved spending time at home with her husband or with the many pets that rarely left her side, shopping, traveling, and spending quality time with her sisters and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Mark Broadrick; sisters, June (Ralph) Barnes, Melody (Derrell) Parker and Myra (Larry) Norton; several nieces and nephews; and adopted daughter, Lucia Gomez.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 30, in the Wilbanks Memorial Chapel with Rev. Sammy Barrett and speaker Cathy Worley officiating.

Interment at LaFayette Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers are Casey Hunter, Mike Parker, Stephen Parker, Braydon Broadrick, Jason Broadrick, and Justin Cargle.

Mr. Timothy Mark “Tim” Perry, Obit (M)

Timothy Mark “Tim” Perry, 64, of Trion, GA, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022, at home with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin F. Perry and Carolyn Duncan Perry as well as a sister, Benjie Perry.
Tim, a native of Chattooga County, was born on January 3, 1958.  He grew up in Trion, GA, and attended Trion High School.  One of the highlights of Tim’s high school career was being one of the “Four Horsemen” of the 1974 State Championship Football Team.
In 1982, Tim graduated from the University of Georgia’s School of Journalism.  After graduation, Tim worked for the Rome News-Tribune and Covington News.  He later served as a District Legislative Assistant for former Congressmen Buddy Darden of the Georgia 7th District.  His time and position with Congressman Darden sparked an interest in politics where he later served as the Georgia State Representative from 1990-1998 where he was instrumental in passing key legislation that created statewide funding for the Pre-K and Hope Scholarship Programs.  During that time, he married his wife of 32 years, Deana Hawkins, and joined the family business, Benny’s Tri-Sum Foods.  A few years later, Tim went on to earn his Juris Doctor degree at John Marshall Law School.  Tim has practiced law for many years in Chattooga County where he served as the Chattooga County State Court Solicitor as well as continuing to run the family business.  Tim was a member of the Trion First Baptist Church as well as a member of the Mason Lodge.
Tim was a devoted husband, father, and uncle.  He loved to spend time with his son, Benjamin, as well as family and friends watching the Georgia Bulldogs, traveling with family and sharing his experiences, playing golf, or working on a new project.  Tim’s gift was generosity and hospitality.
He is survived by his wife, Deana Hawkins-Perry; a son, Benjamin Perry; a sister, Kimberly (Mike) Klouda; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Trion United Methodist Church with Pastor James Hannah officiating.  Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Jeff Wells, Tim Thompson, David Williams, Phil Hardin, Mark Hughes, and Scott Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be David Dooley, Gary Knowles, Brian Thames, Lamar Logan, Joseph Crowe, Gary Cook, and the members of the 1974 Trion High School Football Team, and his nieces and nephews.
Tim will be in state at Trion United Methodist Church and the family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the hour of service on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Trion Bulldog Athletic Club or the Trion United Methodist Church.
