Students from Chattooga High School’s HOSA program participated in a disaster preparedness training exercise at Berry College this past week, helping nursing students gain valuable hands-on experience responding to simulated medical emergencies.

The Chattooga High School students volunteered to portray victims during the Berry College Nursing School’s disaster drill, giving nursing students an opportunity to practice assessing and treating patients in a controlled training environment.

During the exercise, Chattooga High School HOSA members took on the roles of patients with various injuries and medical conditions, giving Berry College nursing students an opportunity to practice patient assessments, emergency care and treatment procedures in a realistic setting.

The experience allowed both groups of students to participate in hands-on healthcare training, with the high school volunteers helping future nurses develop skills they will need in actual medical emergencies.

Disaster preparedness exercises are an important part of nursing education. They allow students to apply classroom knowledge in situations that require quick thinking, teamwork, communication and the ability to prioritize patient care.

In a real disaster, healthcare professionals may be required to treat numerous patients with different levels of injuries and medical needs. Training exercises help future nurses develop the confidence and practical skills necessary to respond effectively under pressure.

For Chattooga High School students interested in pursuing healthcare careers, the opportunity also provided insight into nursing education and the responsibilities of medical professionals during emergency situations.

HOSA is an international student organization dedicated to preparing future healthcare professionals through education, leadership development and hands-on learning experiences. The organization provides students with opportunities to explore medical careers, develop professional skills and participate in activities that complement their classroom instruction.

Chattooga High School HOSA shared highlights of the experience on its Facebook page Saturday, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to volunteer in the Berry College exercise.

The collaboration provided an opportunity for local high school students to contribute to the training of future nurses while gaining valuable exposure to the healthcare field.
