A 44-year-old man was arrested on DUI and child endangerment charges after a Chattooga County deputy stopped a vehicle that had reportedly been the subject of a lookout for a reckless driver.

According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Chris Nathan Wooten, 44, was arrested late September 18 after a deputy spotted a gray Jeep Gladiator on Highway 27 that matched the description of the vehicle.

The deputy stopped the Jeep at Highway 27 and Rossville Boulevard in Trion shortly before 11 p.m.

Wooten reportedly told the deputy that he had been driving recklessly because he was crying and holding his phone while talking on it. The report says a juvenile was inside the vehicle.

After Wooten got out of the Jeep, the deputy reported smelling alcohol and observing watery eyes. Wooten reportedly acknowledged drinking alcohol before driving.

The deputy then administered field sobriety testing. According to the report, Wooten displayed six of six clues on the horizontal gaze nystagmus test and two of four clues during the one-leg stand. The report says Wooten was physically unable to perform the walk-and-turn test.

Wooten declined a preliminary breath test and, after being arrested, refused the state’s implied-consent testing, according to the report.

He was charged with DUI-alcohol and DUI-endangering the life of a child and transported to the Chattooga County Jail without further incident.

The report says Wooten was cooperative during transport.
