Drivers across Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia should use extra caution early today as dense fog is expected through about 10 a.m., with visibility dropping to a quarter mile or less in some areas.
After the fog lifts, the region stays in an unusually warm pattern. Above-average temperatures—running 10 to 25 degrees warmer than normal—are expected to continue through Saturday, and a few record highs could be challenged along the way.
The bigger concern arrives late Friday into Saturday as an active weather pattern moves in. Forecasters say multiple rounds of rain are possible Friday evening through Saturday morning, with 2 to 3 inches of rainfall possible across parts of north Georgia and isolated higher totals. With repeated downpours, flash flooding and river flooding could develop, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
By Saturday, thunderstorms are expected ahead of a cold front, and while widespread severe weather is not guaranteed, a few isolated strong to severe storms are possible as the system moves through.
Looking ahead, conditions should turn drier by early next week, but the combination of drying air and a coming cooldown could bring lower humidity, fire weather concerns, and overnight temperatures near or below freezing in parts of Northwest Georgia.
