A Chattooga County school bus driver previously arrested after a child was dragged by a school bus in Summerville is now facing a felony charge following the completion of an investigation by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
Kandy Michelle Nixon-Craig, 58, was arrested Friday, October 30, and charged with serious injury by vehicle.
Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader told WZQZ News on Saturday that the felony charge resulted from his investigators wrapping up their investigation into the incident.
The original incident happened Wednesday, September 30, on Union Street in Summerville.
According to the original Summerville Police Department incident report obtained by WZQZ News, a child was getting off a school bus when the bus door closed on the child’s backpack. The driver then pulled away before the child was completely clear of the bus, dragging the child along Union Street.
The child suffered an injury to the left leg and was evaluated by Atrium EMS before being transported to Chattooga ER for medical treatment. The child’s identity has not been released.
Nixon-Craig told the responding officer that she believed the child had gotten off the bus and was safely away before she began driving.
However, officers reviewed video footage from the bus that showed the child’s backpack becoming caught in the door as the bus pulled away.
Following the September 30 incident, Nixon-Craig was arrested by the Summerville Police Department and charged with reckless driving, failure to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian, and safe operation of a school bus violations.
The case was subsequently investigated by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Schrader confirmed Saturday that the new felony charge of serious injury by vehicle came as a result of his investigators completing their investigation.
According to Chattooga County Jail records, Nixon-Craig was arrested Friday at approximately 1:53 PM by Chattooga County Deputy Maddison Rosser.
Her property bond was set at $10,000.
The felony arrest represents a significant development in the case, which initially resulted in traffic-related charges following the September incident.
Nixon-Craig is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
