A 27-year-old inmate at the Chattooga County Jail was charged with simple assault following an incident involving a jail officer on August 15.
According to an incident report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, Thomas Marty Laney was charged after Deputy Jared Wilks was notified of an incident involving Laney and Officer Collins.
The report states that surveillance video showed Laney approaching Officer Collins while Collins was serving meals in the booking area. According to the report, Laney attempted to strike Collins, who was able to avoid the blow.
The report says Collins then opened a door and Laney entered while holding a cell tray and allegedly attempted to strike Collins again. Another inmate intervened and pushed Laney against a wall while Collins attempted to restrain him.
Deputies said Laney continued trying to get away while yelling verbal commands at him to stop. Laney eventually complied and was escorted back to his holding cell.
Officer Collins later told investigators that Laney had been acting aggressively while meals were being served and attempted to hit him after Collins told Laney to place his meal tray in the appropriate area for retrieval.
The report states that Laney was charged with simple assault in connection with the incident.
