The Internal Revenue Service is once again offering its Free File program for the 2026 tax season, giving millions of Americans a no-cost option to prepare and file their federal tax returns online.
For this year, taxpayers who earned $89,000 or less in adjusted gross income (AGI) in 2025 qualify to use guided tax preparation software through IRS Free File. The program is offered through eight private-sector partners and is designed to make filing taxes easier, faster, and more affordable.
Each Free File partner sets its own eligibility rules, which may include factors such as income level, age, state residency, or military status. However, most taxpayers within the income threshold — including active-duty military members — can find at least one provider that allows them to file their federal return at no cost. Some partners also offer free state tax filing.
For those who earn more than $89,000, the IRS still provides an option through Free File Fillable Forms, which became available January 26. These are electronic versions of standard IRS paper forms and are best suited for individuals who are comfortable preparing their own taxes without guided assistance.
One of the major benefits of using IRS Free File is the ability to claim valuable tax credits at no cost. Eligible taxpayers can take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit, both of which can significantly reduce tax liability or even result in a refund.
To get started, taxpayers can visit IRS.gov/freefile and choose from several tools to find the best option. Users can explore guided software, use the “Find a Trusted Partner” tool, or browse all available providers before selecting the one that best fits their needs. Once selected, users are directed to the partner’s website to complete their return.
The service is accessible on computers, smartphones, and tablets, making it convenient for users to file from virtually anywhere.
