A man pulled over for speeding over the past weekend ended up being arrested on drug charges.

According to a report from the Chattooga County Sherriff’s office, a 45-year old man was pulled over this past Sunday at Scenic Hill Road due to excessive speeding. The deputy who pulled him over had clocked him at 65mph in a 45mph zone.

Charles Smick, the driver of the vehicle, told the deputy that his instrument cluster lights didn’t work so he was not aware he was speeding. While the deputy continued talking with Smick he detected the smell of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Smick admitted to smoking marijuana when we was in Alabama. The deputy then requested the Trion Police Department to help assist him with the stop and the standard field sobriety tests.

During the testing on Smick, the officers noticed he was having difficulty correctly performing the tasks that the assessment required. During the testing, the vehicle was searched and in it the deputy found, 3 plastic bags of marijuana, 2 pipes containing marijuana residue, and other drug related objects.

Smick was arrested and charged with DUI-drugs, speeding and brake light requirements.
