A blast of winter air is settling over Chattooga County and the rest of Northwest Georgia Monday, and the National Weather Service in Peachtree City is warning that some roads could turn slick in spots during the morning hours.

With temperatures staying at or below freezing for part of the morning, moisture left behind from rain and drizzle can freeze on contact in patches. That means drivers may run into sudden slick areas even if most pavement looks fine. The greatest concern is on bridges, overpasses, and other elevated roadways that cool faster than the ground, along with shaded stretches that may not warm up quickly after sunrise. Officials urge motorists to use caution, slow down, leave extra following distance, and allow more time to stop, especially during the commute.

The cold will be the bigger story beyond the roads. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Monday, and another advisory is expected Monday night into Tuesday morning as the chill deepens again after sunset. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder, with “feels like” temperatures dropping into the single digits and low teens at times across the region. Residents are encouraged to take precautions for plants, pets, and pipes, and to check on neighbors who may be vulnerable to the cold—especially anyone without reliable heat or those impacted by utility problems.

Even as sunshine returns, the air mass remains firmly in place, keeping Northwest Georgia locked into a cold pattern through the week. Forecasters say there is a small chance of winter weather later in the upcoming weekend, but uncertainty remains high at this time and any potential impacts are still unclear.
