Mr Shelton Dubose "Chief" Whittle, died Monday April 4, 2011, at Floyd Medical Center at the age of 89 years old. He was born in Columbia, S.C. and grew up in Columbia and Florence, S.C. He attended Newberry College in South Carolina, the University of Miami in Miami, FL, and the University of Indiana in Indianapolis, Indiana. He joined the Navy in 1942 and served in the Mediteranean during WWII, and was part of the raid on Normandy Beach. After the war he and his wife returned to Fort Pierce, FL, and then to Miami, FL. After
graduating from the University of Miami, he had a teaching and coaching career. He continued in the Naval Reserves for 40 years, and spent 30 summers on Lookout Mountain at Camp Cloudmont for boys and Valley View Ranch for girls as their chief cook. He retired in 1982 and moved to Cloudlalnd, GA, where he was a substitute teacher in
Chattooga County School System, a member of the Chattooga County FFA, Young Farmers, Rome Coin Club and the Gadsden Coin Club.
Shelton was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Picou Whittle, sister, Joyce Barrow and brothers, Prevost Whittle, Jr, Charles Whittle,
Donald Whittle, Landon Whittle, Thomas Whittle and Herbert Whittle.
Surviving are son & daughter-in-law, Charles & Charlotte Whittle, daughters & son-in-law, Susan Wilcox, Patricia & Johnny Compton, 5 grandchildren, Kelly Thomas, Justin Rose, Kristi Wilcox, Sarah Millican, Paul Whittle, 3 great-grandchildren, Shania Thomas, Logan Millican, Nathaniel Millican, sister, Mildred Martin, brothers, Paul Whittle, Carroll Whittle.
Mr. Shelton Dubose "Chief" Whittle will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Saturday April 9, 2011 from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M.
