Mrs. Melba Butler Tinney, 89, of Rome, passed away on January 31, 2012 at her residence
with her children by her side. Mrs. Tinney was born on July 22, 1922 at Round Mtn., AL,
to Robert and Mae Arthur Butler. She spent the early years of her life in Alabama and
Trion. She met her husband, Raymond Hoyt Tinney in Trion who preceded her in
death in 2005. Mr. Tinney was a WWII veteran, having served aboard the USS Mervine.
Mrs. Tinney was a member of the Rome Church of Christ.
Beside her husband, she was preceded in death by a great grandson, Landon Drew
Dasher; a brother, “Sonnie” Butler; and two sisters, Syble Purcell and Mildred Brewster.
She is survived by two children, daughter, Phyllis (Ron) Dasher, Rome, and a son, Victor
Tinney, Rome; four grandsons, Drew ( Jessica) Dasher, Lincoln, NE, Mark ( Chandise) Dasher,
Charleston, SC, Neil (Linda) Tinney, Huntsville, AL, and Ben Tinney, Rome, GA; three
great grandsons, Logan Dasher, Liam Dasher, and Chason Tinney. Also many nieces and
nephews survive. Her immediate family would like to include with them, Frankie and
ImogeneVaughn, and Wayne and Leola Winslett who helped her in so many ways
during the last years of her life. Mr. And Mrs. Vaughn not only were available at all hours,
but provided nutritious meals every day. Mr. And Mrs. Winslett brought fresh vegetables
all summer. We could not have left our mother in her home if it had not been for these
special neighbors who we will always consider as part of our family. Christian attributes
abound in them.
Mrs. Tinney was a kind, gentle, and caring person who always put herself last. She
never lost her temper, but sought peaceful solutions to all problems. She spent the
greater part of her life taking care of her family by canning and freezing food from
her garden. She enjoyed quilting and needle work as well as growing flowers in her yard.
She was the woman God described in the Bible and a Christian example to all who
knew her.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 1:00 until 3:00 p. m.
