A major new landmark for Cherokee County, Alabama could officially open as soon as April, as contractors and the project architect complete final touchups on the county’s new courthouse.
The 37,500-square-foot facility, describing it as “state of the art” in both design and functionality. From its exterior appearance to the elegant interior finishes and upgraded courtroom technology, officials say the building is something Cherokee County residents can be proud of.
The new courthouse includes three courtrooms, allowing trials and hearings to be conducted simultaneously, along with a private hearing area within the District Court suite. Courtrooms are equipped with electronic displays for those in the gallery and for jurors.
Safety was also a priority in the design. The building includes two safe rooms intended to protect employees and visitors during severe weather events.
Probate Judge and Commission Chairman Tim Burgess said the county plans to conduct a final walkthrough and approval around mid-March. He noted it could take up to a month to move in furniture, complete workstations, and prepare offices for full public service. Judges have already begun training in the new facility, while other staff members will receive training on the updated technology.
Officials say the ribbon cutting and official opening will likely take place in April, marking what many are calling a historic and exciting moment for Cherokee County
