A teacher at Rome Middle School was arrested Monday on a felony charge of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance after police say she was found with a THC vape.
According to a Rome Police Department report, an officer was notified after a teacher was reportedly caught vaping in one of the school restrooms.
Police say 45-year-old Becky Lane Scott admitted the device was a THC vape and told officers she took a hit from it because she experiences severe anxiety during testing week.
The Rome Middle School staff directory lists Scott as a special education teacher.
Rome City Schools released a statement saying the incident was addressed promptly by law enforcement and did not cause any significant disruption to the school day. The school system also said students were never in danger and that student and staff safety remains the district’s top priority.
Because the case involves both personnel and legal matters, school officials said they are limited in what information they can release. The district said it is cooperating fully with authorities and is following all policies and procedures related to the incident.
School leaders also asked the community to avoid speculation while the matter moves through the legal and administrative process.
