Shorter University in Rome has announced a nationwide search for its next president, following the tenure of President Don Dowless. The university is seeking a Christ-centered, visionary leader to guide the school forward, noting the search as a chance to reaffirm its mission to “Transform Lives through Christ.”

Shorter, founded in 1873, has longstanding ties with the Georgia Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Presidential Search Committee says the next leader must strongly align with the school’s faith commitments, including affirming the Baptist Faith and Message (2000) and Shorter’s faith and lifestyle statement.

The committee says candidates should have a terminal degree, at least 10 years of higher education administrative experience, and a record of spiritual maturity, transparency, collaboration, and strong communication. Fundraising experience and knowledge of accreditation are also listed as key qualifications.

Applications and nominations are being accepted now, with materials due by March 18, 2026. Submissions should include a résumé and letter of recommendation and be emailed to searchcommittee@shorter.edu.
