If it doesn’t feel like late December in Chattooga County and across Northwest Georgia, you’re not imagining it. A warmer-than-normal pattern is taking hold and will only strengthen as we move through the week and into the Christmas holiday.

For today (Sunday):
A weak and fading cold front is sliding through the region this morning. It’s not a major weather-maker, but it will bring more clouds and a small (10–20%) chance of a light shower, especially west of I-75 and closer to the Alabama border. Any rain that pops up should be brief and light, with many communities staying completely dry.

Even with the extra clouds, temperatures will run mild for this time of year. Afternoon highs are expected to reach the low 60s in North Georgia, with even warmer readings farther south. As the day goes on, drier air and high pressure move in behind the front, and skies should gradually clear later today.

Tonight into Monday:
High pressure shifts from the Ohio Valley toward the East Coast, turning our winds more easterly. That helps reinforce a dry, comfortable air mass across Northwest Georgia. Overnight lows settle into the upper 30s to low 40s, and Monday stays pleasant with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s—still above normal for late December.

The big story: The week ahead and the Christmas forecast
An expansive upper-level ridge will dominate much of the U.S., and it’s set to deliver an unusually warm and mostly dry stretch for North and Central Georgia. By the time we reach Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, temperatures across much of Northwest Georgia (outside of the higher mountain elevations) are forecast to climb into the 70s.

To put that into perspective, that’s roughly 12 to 20 degrees above average for this time of year. Overnight lows will also stay unusually mild—running 12 to 25 degrees above average in some spots—meaning mornings won’t have the typical winter bite.

Will we see rain this week?
Rain chances stay low overall, but there are a couple of windows to watch. A few weak, glancing fronts tied to systems passing well north of Georgia could bring isolated showers (around 20% chance) to parts of North Georgia on Tuesday and again on Friday. Even if a shower develops, rainfall totals would be very light and many places won’t see anything measurable.

Bottom line for Chattooga County and Northwest Georgia:
We’re headed into a stretch of dry, warm, and springlike weather that could have highs pushing close to record territory around Christmas. If you’ve got outdoor plans—travel, last-minute shopping, holiday parades, or family gatherings—this forecast is about as friendly as it gets for late December.
