A Summerville man is facing multiple charges after police say he assaulted a woman during a family gathering and later attacked a police officer while resisting arrest.
According to reports, Michael Joseph-Richard Hines, 32, of Summerville, was arrested this week in Rome following an incident at a home on Villamar Street. Police say Hines allegedly yelled at, threatened, and balled his fist toward a female victim. The victims reported Hines was under the influence of drugs at the time of the assault.
After officers located Hines, police say he fled on foot. When officers caught up with him, reports state Hines allegedly grabbed an officer by the neck, began punching, and made threats during the struggle. Authorities say the officer’s shoulder microphone and uniform were damaged in the altercation.
Police further reported that Hines kicked officers while refusing to exit a patrol vehicle, and continued to physically resist officers after arriving at the jail.
Hines has been charged with simple assault, disorderly conduct, two counts of felony obstruction, obstruction, interference with government property, cruelty to children, and simple battery against a police officer.
