Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas used a Thanksgiving message to the community to announce that he will be running for the Georgia State Senate in District 53. In a video released Thursday, Thomas shared holiday greetings alongside family and friends before revealing that his time as mayor is nearing an end and that he is preparing for the next step in public service.

Thomas, who has served as mayor of Trion for the past eight years, said his current term is winding down, making this an appropriate moment to share his intentions for the upcoming state race. He stated that he looks forward to campaigning and hopes to continue serving the people of Northwest Georgia in a new capacity.

State Senate District 53 covers portions of Chattooga, Walker, Catoosa and Floyd counties. The seat is expected to draw attention as candidates begin announcing their intentions for the 2026 election cycle.

Thomas closed his announcement by wishing residents a happy Thanksgiving and expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the Town of Trion.
