DOT to Meet with Chattooga County Tommorrow

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters and Public Works Director Lamar Canada are expected to meet with officials from the Georgia Department of Transportation on Monday to discuss the closure of the Lyerly Dam Bridge.

The Bridge was closed in December by the Department of Transportation.  County officials are bewildered by the bridge closing.  Earlier this year the DOT had given the county a list of bridge problems in the county.  While the Lyerly Dam Bridge was on that list, it was not slated for closure.

One of the bridges that was slated for closure, unless problems were fixed was a bridge in the Oak Hill area.  The necessary repairs were made and that bridge remains open.  Had the DOT told the county about the pending closure of the Lyerly Dam Bridge, the county may have averted the bridge being closed.

The closing of the bridge in Lyerly has caused problems for area residents.  Some residents with Post Office boxes in Lyerly are now having to make a 10 mile trip to get their mail.  Also, the county has had to deal with the garbage dumpsters that were located on the other side of the bridge from Lyerly.  A temporary dumpster was set up behind the Pure Stop in Lyerly to help with the problem.

Calhoun Chevy Dealer Closed

Service Chevrolet in Calhoun is closed its doors on Wednesday.

Rumors that Service Chevrolet would close have been circulating in Calhoun for the past two weeks, and Wednesday, owner Dave Logan said, “it looks like we are going to do that.”

Logan told the Calhoun Times that he was still working out the details and did not have time for an interview.

The Service Chevrolet announcement comes as General Motors Corp. continues to struggle.

The Detroit auto giant is offering zero-percent financing for up to 60 months on the 2008 Chevy Trailblazer, the GMC Envoy and three Saab models.

The move is designed to help GM sell new cars and trucks and make good use of the funding that the White House earlier this month agreed to extend to both GM and Chrysler.

GM blamed a big part of the company’s sales meltdown in recent months on prospective customers’ inability to obtain financing, pointing out that less than 30 percent of buyers have a credit score above that minimum level.

The more lenient standards should provide a tailwind at a time when the automotive industry is facing the prospect of dismal December sales — a seasonally adjusted annual rate of fewer than 10 million vehicles.

However, it will take more than incentives to bring buyers back to the showrooms, according to Edmunds.com analyst Jesse Toprak.

“As questions about the economy remain unanswered, many consumers are reluctant to respond to the incredibly generous deals available on new cars,” he said.

Total U.S. auto sales dropped by more than a third in November, scraping in at the lowest annual rate in 26 years. GM and Chrysler led the declines with drops of more than 40 percent each.

Sherriff Talks About First Days on Job

AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio spoke with Sheriff John Everett on Friday about the first two days on the job for Chattooga County’s new top law enforcement officer.  Everett said that overall everything has gone smoothly as he took over the helm from former Sheriff Ralph Kellett.  Everett took office at Midnight on New Years Day. Everett said that there was a large amount of old paperwork at the Sheriff’s Office that was left behind.  Everett said that he and his workers went through and cleaned out some of the old  paperwork dating back to the 1980’s  that was no longer needed.   Everett said that other than a few problems with computer passwords, that have since been resolved, there have been no major hurdles since coming into office.  Everett pointed out the large amount of drug arrests and DUI’s that have been made in the past two days as evidence that things are running smoothly.
