County Seeks Settlement with Mt. Vernon

The impasse between Chattooga County and the county’s largest employer, Mt. Vernon Mills in Trion, is headed to court unless a settlement can be reached.  The problem centers on the evaluation of property values by the county assessor’s office.  Mt. Vernon is contesting the amount that county has valued the property. AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio spoke with County Commissioner Jason Winters on Friday who said that he is actively seeking an out of court settlement with Mt. Vernon Mills.  Winters said that he hopes a court battle between Mt. Vernon and the County can be avoided. Chattooga County Attorney Chris Corbin told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio that pre-trial motions are due on January 8th and a hearing would be set for the week of February 2nd.  If the issue does go to court either Judge Connelly or Judge House would be hearing the case.

Lyerly Dam Bridge Update

Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters and Public Works Director, Lamar Canada met late Friday afternoon to look over the Lyerly Dam Bridge which was closed last Friday by the Georgia Department of Transportation. Winters told AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio News that a bridge report given to Chattooga County back in September by the Department of Transportation mentioned some issues regarding weight limit signs, but did not hint that the bridge would be closed.Another bridge in the Oak Hill area was also pointed out in the report and the necessary repairs were made to keep the bridge open.
Winters said that he and Canada would be meeting with the Georgia Department of Transportation on Monday to find out exactly what the county needs to do in order to get the bridge back open to vehicle traffic.

New Sex Offender Law In Place

Georgia will joins several other states on today in complying with guidelines in a 2006 federal law requiring authorities to track the Internet addresses of sex offenders.

That law will require sex offenders to give their Internet passwords, their screen names and also e-mail addresses to law enforcement officials.

There are around 16,000 offenders listed in the state of Georgia. State Senator Cecil Staton, who wrote the bill, says that the measure is designed to keep the Internet safe for children. Authorities could use the passwords and other information to make sure offenders aren’t stalking children on-line.
