Centre Adopts New Policy for Off Duty Cops

The Centre City Council has adopted a policy covering the extra jobs city police officers may take when they are off duty.

The issue arose when Walmart managers sought to hire some of the officers for security during the holiday season, and city officials realized they had no guidelines in place. City Attorney Al Shumaker said liability is an issue.

He cited a case in Birmingham, Ala., where the city was sued after an off-duty police officer working security for a bar refused to intervene in a fight, and a man was killed.

Centre’s policy spells out the types of jobs officers may take and requires the employer to provide insurance. It also states that the officers’ first duty is to the city, Shumaker said.
