Local Farm Bureau to Participate in Food Check Out Week

To celebrate our country’s safe and abundant food supply, Chattooga County Farm Bureau is participating in a statewide Food Check-Out Week event. From February 1 until February 27, Chattooga County Farm Bureau will be accepting non perishable food donations and cash donations to assist the hungry in our county and to provide food assistance for the Ronald McDonald House in Augusta

Of the money collected during this time, half will be used to assist the hungry in Chattooga County.  The other half will go to the Georgia Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, the sponsor of the statewide effort, to help assist visiting families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Augusta according to  Mrs.Nanette Bryan, Chattooga County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee Chair.   

Anyone who would like to make a donation is welcome to do so by visiting the Chattooga County Farm Bureau office at 9921 Commerce Street, Summerville. (Located directly across from the Summerville Post Office)

Commissioner’s Meeting Tommorrow

The Chattooga County Commissioner’s Monthly Meeting has been changed to Tuesday, January 26 at 6 pm in the Courtroom at the Annex.

Normaly the commissioner’s meeting is held on the fourth Thursday of the month, but this month’s meeting was changed due to a scheduling conflict.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend the monthly meeting and an opportunity for questions and answers with the commissioner is given at each of the monthly meetings.

 

 

Lindale Pastor Elected VP of GA Baptist Convention

Rev. Tim Burnham, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Lindale, has been elected to the office of First Vice-President of the Georgia Baptist Convention. The convention, which is comprised of 3,604 churches in Georgia is part of the larger Southern Baptist Convention, which supports 5,512 International Career Missionaries and 5,304 North American Career Missionaries as well as worldwide hunger and disaster relief ministries

Lot of Rain – No Major Problems – Updated 5:30 AM

A massive amount of rain moved through Northwest Georgia on Saturday night and into Sunday afternoon, but all in all Chattooga County did not experience any major problems.

Commissioner Jason Winters told AM 1180 on Sunday afternoon that there was some localized flooding in some areas that are prone to flooding like Hair Lake Road, but overall things remained in good conditions.  No roads were officially closed over the weekend due to the rain.

Chattooga County residents reported rain fall between 1.5 and 3 inches in about a 14 hour period on Sunday.

Early Monday morning the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, GA issued a Flood Warning for the Chattooga River.  Flood Stage, which is 14 feet, was reported around 1:00 AM Monday morning.  At 5:15 Monday morning the Chattooga River stage was around 14.7 feet which is considered minor floodstage.

 

 

Armuchee Man Damages Car of the Man Who Hit Him

An Armuchee man was jailed after police say he damaged the car of a man who hit his car in an accident and then fled the scene, reports stated.

According to Rome police reports and Floyd County Jail records:

Rusty Byron Boozer, 31, of 2811 Everett Springs Road is charged with fel-ony second-degree criminal damage to property and misdemeanor public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

The incident occurred after an accident with injuries at the intersection of Garden Lakes Boulevard a Shoreline Drive on Sunday morning.

Devin Lashawn Watts, 26, of 308 A Myrtle Street was cited for failing to yield to a stop sign, driving on a suspended license, expired tags and probation.

Reports stated Watts failed to yield at a stop sign and struck the car Boozer was in. Watts then fled the scene. Police arrived and Boozer told police they better catch Watts or “I’m gonna kill them.”

The driver of the car Erika Danielle Boozer was injured and taken to Floyd Medical Center for treatment.

Police found Watts later at 16 Conasauga Plaza and placed him in arrest. Boozer, who also found Watts, kicked in the front quarter panel of the 1988 Chevy Cutlass that Watts was driving.

Both men remained in jail as of Sunday morning.

 

Municipal Meetings

There will be a Workshop followed by the Regular Council Meeting for the Town of Trion Thursday, January 28, 2010.  The Workshop will begin at 6:00 P.M. The Regular Council Meeting will follow the workshop after a brief break in the Town Hall Conference Room.

The City of Summerville Mayor and City Council will hold a 6-month Budget Review Work Session in the Council Chambers this evening beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Summerville Resident Arrested in Cherokee County

According to the docket records from the Cherokee County, Alabama Sheriff’s department a Summerville woman was arrested last week on bad check charges.

Ruby Brewster Norris, age 68 of Summerville, Georgia  was charged with Negotiating Worthless Negotiable Instruments on Thursday of last week.

 

Rep. Reece Expresses Support for Rome Tennis Complex

Officials in Floyd County plan to lobby the state legislature for funds to build a tennis complex in Rome that would have an estimated $16 million impact on the local economy.

The joint venture between Rome, Floyd County and Berry College would bring a tennis facility to the area that would be used more than 20 times per year and give Rome a shot at collegiate tennis tournaments. 

The layout of the complex would include six courts side-by-side that would accommodate intercollegiate tennis events. With Shorter in the NAIA and Berry in NCAA Division III, the opportunity to host major collegiate events would be enhanced.

Representative Barbara Massey Reece (D-Menlo) who represents a good portion of rural Floyd County had expressed her support for the complex.

A VERY STRONG AND DEEP AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IN THE MID MISSISSIPPI VALLEY WILL CONTINUE TO LIFT NORTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE AFTERNOON… WHILE HIGH PRESSURE REMAINS ANCHORED ALONG THE MID ATLANTIC COAST. THE TIGHT PRESSURE GRADIENT BETWEEN THESE TWO SYSTEMS HAS ALREADY RESULTED IN STRONG GUSTY WINDS ACROSS NORTH GEORGIA… AND THIS IS EXPECTED CONTINUE WELL INTO THE AFTERNOON… ESPECIALLY FOR THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS. MANY AREAS WILL EXPERIENCE SUSTAINED WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH… WITH GUSTS OVER 50 MPH AT TIMES.
