Hope Scholarship Will Cover Less Than 50% of College Costs by 2016

According to a presentation made this week by the Georgia Student Finance Commission to a Joint Economic Development & Tourism Committee, the Class of 2016 (this year’s incoming high school freshman class) will receive less than 50% of college tuition costs from the HOPE Scholarship. Because of a widening gap between Georgia Lottery revenues and college tuition costs, HOPE scholars …can expect to have significantly higher out-of-pocket costs.

Because of the problem, Georgia Lottery officials discussed with legislators the possibility of permitting video lottery terminals at several locations around the state as a means of increasing revenues for HOPE. Georgia Lottery President Margaret DeFrancisco told lawmakers she does not believe the current menu of games can provide a significant enough of an increase in revenue to meet the demand of lottery-funded education programs. According to Lottery Board Chairman James Braswell, the agency will not add video lottery terminals without a broader discussion with the public and elected officials.

Lyerly Man Cited After Accident Taking Out Fence

A Lyerly man was issued a citation and a warning after an accident on Shinbone Valley Road in Menlo that took out around 200 feet of fencing around a pasture.

The Georgia State Patrol said that  twenty-two year old Kyle Edwards of Lyerly lost control of his 1989 Chevy pickup while negotiating a curve about four-tenths of a mile from the intersection of Highway 48 on Shinbone Valley Road.  Edwards left the roadway and damaged around 200 feet of fence on the property of Eddie Massey in Menlo.

Troopers said that Edwards failed to report the accident to law enforcement and only reported it after contacting Luallens Wrecker Service to tow the vehicle from the scene.  Edwards was issued citations for failure to report an accident and issued a warning for faulty equipment.

Troopers Report More Info On Cloudland Wreck Involving Log Truck

There is no doubt that fog was a factor in the wreck on Tuesday, January 11th, between a Ford Taurus and a Mack log truck on Highway 157 at Cloudland.  What remains to be seen is if citations will be issued in connection with the accident and just who might be issued citations.

The Georgia State Patrol released a report yesterday on the accident that stated that the log truck, driven that belongs to Double A Timber of a Unity Church Road address in Chattooga County and was driven by 50 year old David Dewayne Patterson of an East Armuchee Road address, did pull into the path of an oncoming vehicle on Highway 157.

However, the report also stated that the car, which was a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by 38 year old Michael Clayton Smith of a Gilreath Mill Road, Cloudland address, did not have the headlights in the "on" position when troopers checked at the scene.  According to the report, Smith told troopers that he "believed" the headlights were on but "that he was not certain."  Smith told troopers that he was traveling at or about the posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour.

The report said that citations may still be issued in connection with the accident.
