LaFayette Looks at “Pool Hall” Ordinance

THE LAFAYETTE CITY COUNCIL IS EXPECTED TO REVISE A 1970’s ORDINANCE AGAINST POOL HALLS SERVING ALCOHOL… AND THE REASON IS LAFAYETTE’S NEWEST RESTAURANT ON THE SQUARE.

MICHAEL LOVELADY OF ONE-ELEVEN APPROACHED THE COUNCIL SEVERAL MONTHS AGO ON THE ISSUE.  HE WANTS TO APPLY FOR A BEER AND WINE LICENSE FOR HIS RESTAURANT DOWNSTAIRS… WHILE MAINTAINING A FEW POOL TABLES FOR PATRONS, UPSTAIRS.

THE OLD ORDINANCE FORBADE THAT COMBINATION… SEEING POOL TABLES AND ALCOHOL AS A RECIPE FOR PUBLIC NUISANCE.  BUT THE DIFFERENCE IN THE PROPOSED NEW ORDINANCE IS A REQUIREMENT THAT THE BUSINESS MUST MAKE 70-PERCENT OF ITS REVENUE FROM FOOD SERVICE… AND HAVE NO MORE THAN 4 POOL TABLES ON-SITE.  PROPONENTS SAY THAT MAKES IT A RESTAURANT… NOT A POOL HALL.

A PUBLIC HEARING WAS HELD AT THE MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING FOR JANUARY… BUT THE LEGAL TIMING HAD NOT BEEN MET FOR A VOTE ON THE PROPOSAL THAT NIGHT.   A COUPLE OF CITIZENS HAD GENERAL COMMENTS AGAINST THE ISSUE OF DRUNK DRIVING… BUT MOST WHO MADE A COMMENT WERE PLEASED WITH THE ADDITION OF THE ONE-ELEVEN RESTAURANT TO THE DOWNTOWN AREA.

THE MAYOR AND COUNCIL WILL MEET WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT 7 FOR A VOTE ON THE NEW ORDINANCE.

Department of Revenue Anti-Fraud Program

The Georgia Department of Revenue has put in place new security measures to prevent tax fraud in Georgia. The Department has taken these actions due to the increase in fraudulent filings over the last several years.

The Department will run each return through a process to ensure that the information provided on the return is accurate. If a tax return is flagged by our process because of potential inconsistencies, the taxpayer will be asked to provide the Department with some additional information in order to process the return.

This new process will help prevent tax fraud in Georgia, said Department of Revenue Commissioner Doug MacGinnitie. Stopping fraud is a Department priority, and we will continue to take the steps necessary to protect taxpayers and taxpayer money.

The Department estimates that the new process will save the state millions of dollars, with little inconvenience to legitimate taxpayers.

`By using this new system, we will cut off a way for criminals to commit fraud against Georgia taxpayers, as well as save the State millions of dollars in revenue, said Commissioner MacGinnitie.

Gaylesville Man Charged with Stealing Boat Trailer

A Gaylesville man has been arrested in connection with the weekend theft of a boat trailer.

On Sunday (January 15th), two fishermen from Kentucky put their boat in Weiss Lake at Yellow Creek Boat Ramp and began fishing just past the bridge, when they saw a black SUV leaving the boat ramp with their trailer in tow.

The suspect was traveling south on Highway 273 toward Leesburg but turned around and headed north passing the fisherman at the boat ramp at a high rate of speed.

Deputies Tony Monroy and Matt Peek, quickly responded to the scene – and spoke with the store owner, who saw the suspect, and was able to provide a description and partial tag number, which enabled deputies to identify the suspect as 27 year old Dusty Ray Cavin.

Cavin was soon spotted in Cedar Bluff and when officers questioned him concerning the theft, he admitted responsibility, and led authorities to the stolen trailer, which was returned to the rightful owners.

Cavin was booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center, charged with 1st Degree Theft of Property.
