McReynolds Indictment Stems from Alleged Incident with 17 Year Old Intern

A former Rome police officer involved in a tasing incident is now facing two felony counts of making false statements, one felony count of violating his oath of office, and one misdemeanor count of sexual battery.

Marcus Alan McReynolds, 27, of 151B Fox Hall Drive, Calhoun, turned himself in at the Floyd County Jail on the charges after he was

indicted by a Floyd County Grand Jury.

The charges are not related to the June 25 tasing incident, said Rome Police Chief Elaine Snow.

McReynolds was assigned administrative duties in the records department after the tasing incident, and the sexual battery case involves a 17-year-old intern with the department, Snow said.

Once police were notified, an investigation began and McReynolds lied to investigators, Snow said.

McReynolds was fired from the Rome Police Department on Sept. 20 for unsatisfactorily completion of his probation period because of the sexual battery investigation.

He joined the department in November 2010.

The former officer was booked into the jail Monday afternoon and released on bond three hours later.

In the tasing incident last summer McReynolds spotted a 20-year-old man stumbling in the street on Martha Berry Boulevard and, after trying to call family members to come and get him, was attempting to arrest him for public drunkenness.

The individual resisted arrest and was tasered by Lt. Louis Johnson, who had arrived to assist McReynolds. The suspect sustained serious injuries as a result of a fall that occurred during the struggle.

Johnson and McReynolds were placed on administrative duties after the incident.

The injured suspect was never criminally charged.

Water District Sees Increase in Revenues

The Chattooga County Water District has seen an increase in revenues over the past four years due to water line expansion throughout the county according to County Commissioner Jason Winters.

Winters said that in 2008 the Chattooga County Water District had a monthly average income of $37,230.50 and a yearly total of $446,766.13.  That compares with a 2011 monthly average income of $70,059.18 and a yearly total income of $840,651.02

Water revenues for the Chattooga County Water District have increased by 88% due to expansion of the system.  Winters said "We will expect to see the water revenue increase higher in 2012  by an estimated $12,000 to $15,000 per month due to the additional 300 customers brought online by the recent 40 miles of water line installed."

Water line expansion is ongoing at Cloudland and in the Holland and Chattoogaville areas.  With the expansion of the water lines Chattooga County also will be in a position to sell water to neighboring counties in the future.

Drivers Identified in Cloudland Wreck Caused by Fog

The wreck on Highway 157 at Cloudland Tuesday may have been caused by the foggy conditions that persisted throughout the day and into the night.  The Georgia State Patrol post in Rome released the names of the drivers late Wednesday afternoon, but the accident report is incomplete.

The accident happened as a log truck was pulling out of Otting Tract Wildlife Management Area off of Georgia Highway 157 at Cloudland and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.  The log truck, a 2006 Mack,  belongs to Double A Timber of a Unity Church Road address in Chattooga County and was driven by 50 year old David Dewayne Patterson of an East Armuchee Road address.  The car was a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by 38 year old Michael Clayton Smith of a Gilreath Mill Road, Cloudland address.

Witnesses told AM 1180 that the car hit the log truck in the fuel tanks.  Residents in the area say that the logging company has signs posted along Highway 157 to warn drivers that trucks may be entering the roadway.  However, some residents of Cloudland say that with the foggy conditions it was extremely hard to see the trucks entering the roadway.

No one appears to have been seriously injured in the accident.  Once again, the accident is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol post in Rome.
