Job Readiness Kickoff set for Nov. 12 in Rome

The Georgia Department of Labor is taking its Special Workforce Assistance Team (SWAT) to Rome Tuesday, Nov. 12, to assist Northwest Georgia job seekers in their search for employment by offering workshops and informational sessions two days prior to the city’s annual Northwest Georgia Career Expo. The Northwest Georgia Job Readiness event will be held from 1-4 p.m. at The Forum, 2 Government Plaza. Job seekers will be able to take part in several workshops such as: `Marketing Yourself Using Social Media,` `Interviewing Skills,` `Job Search after 40,` `Creating a Value-based Résumé,` and `How to Succeed at a Job Fair.`

Attendees will also have the opportunity to receive hands-on assistance in developing their own social media pages, creating personal business cards for their job search, and developing their own 30-second “commercial” to market themselves for new career opportunities, and others.

Goodwill of North Georgia is also hosting workshops for job seekers on Monday, Nov. 11, at the same location.

The Job Readiness event is designed to help prepare job seekers for the Fifth Annual Northwest Georgia Career Expo which will be held Thursday, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. until 12 noon also at The Forum.

Dedication of New Memorials at Veterans Park

Next month Veterans Day will be observed on November 11.  The Chattooga County Veterans Park Committee will hold a special dedication service the weekend before Veterans Day on Saturday, November 9th at Veterans Park located in Dowdy Park in Summerville.

Twenty-one new veterans markers will be dedicated on that day.  Also there will be a parade to honor the veterans.  Those participating in the parade will gather near Earle Rainwater Funeral Home and proceed down Commerce Street to the Veterans Memorials.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and honor our veterans.

Mr. Austin Warren Obit (ER)

 

MR. AUSTIN WARREN, JR., age 83, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday evening in a Rome hospital following an extended illness. He was born on January 24, 1930, a son of the late Austin Warren, Sr. and Tennie Henry Warren. Mr. Warren was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, a Veteran of Korea serving in the U.S. Army, His working life was in maintenance departments of the Georgia Rug Mill and the City of Summerville. He was preceded in death by wife the late Margaret Alred Easter Warren, a son the late Jack Austin Warren, and sister the Late Bonnie Allmon. Mr. Warren was a member of Chattooga Lodge #704 F & AM and the Chattooga Shrine Club.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law-Denise and Rick Wyatt; step daughter-Paula Easter; grandson-Stacy Wyatt; great grandson-Will Wyatt; step grandson-Paul Chamlee; step great grandchildren-Addison Belle Chamlee, Avi Rose Chamlee, Jaci Elizabeth Cleveland, and Emily Alexis Craig; brothers-Robert Warren and Rick Warren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26th, at 5:00 P.M. from Graveside in Summerville Cemetery with Dr. Paul Mason officiating and Masonic Rites by Chattooga Lodge #704 F & AM; Active Pallbearers members of Chattooga Shrine Club. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 3:30 until the hour of service.

Mrs. Jacqueline “Jackie” Kellett Wesson Stephens, age 90, of Summerville, GA, passed away Wednesday October 23, 2013, at her residence.

Mrs. Stephens was born on December 05, 1922 in Summerville, GA, to Judson LeRoy Kellett and Minnie Elizabeth Gass Kellett. She was the owner and operator of Jackie’s Beauty Shop for 30 years. Mrs. Stephens was a lifetime member of South Summerville Baptist Church and a life member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary 6688. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, LeRoy Kellett; twins, Katherine and Kellett Wesson; 1st husband, Charles “Purcell” Wesson; 2nd husband, E. D. Stephens; grandsons, Robin Meadows and Shawn Wesson.

Surviving are daughters, Linda Meadows, Trion, GA, Rose Mary Johnson, Summerville, GA, Hazel Millican, Menlo, GA; son, Charles Wesson, JR, Summerville, GA; honorary son and wife, Robert and Debbie Gaines; a sister and brother-in-law, Frances and Frank Ledford, Summerville, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Elizabeth Kellett, Huntsville, AL; granddaughters, Rhonda Lively and Renee Ware; grandsons, Ricky Johnson, Kyle Wesson, Davin Meadows, and Randy Meadows; great grandchildren, Landon and Khol Wesson, Micah and Zach Lively, Tommy Meadows, John and Jessica Ware, Angel Meadows Ware, Brandon Meadows, and Patrick Greene; great great granddaughters, Halli Lively and Danalee Lively.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p. m. Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Studdard and Bro. Mike Price officiating. Private burial will follow in Summerville Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be great grandsons, Tommy Meadows, Brandon Meadows, John Ware, Landon Wesson, Michah Lively and Zack Lively. Honorary pallbearers will be Nell Hunt, Louie and Gloria Carillo, and children, Abraham, Benji, Jericho, Aaron, and Gloria; Employees of Life Choice Hospice, Tammie Meadows, Robert and Debbie Gaines, Billy Brown, Brenda Copeland, Dustin Swafford, and Davin Swafford.

Mrs. Stephens will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 p. m. until the service hour on Saturday.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the South Summerville Baptist Church Building Fund.

Cloudland Man’s Ex Accused of Taking More Than Clothes

A Cloudland man says his ex-girlfriend took more than her clothes when she came to retrieve her personal items from the man’s Stateline Road residence this past Sunday.  According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department the Cloudland man said his ex-girlfriend came to get her personal things from his home and made off with a lot of his tools.  The man’s nephew said that he observed the woman along with her son and daughter load up an air compressor.  The Cloudland man said that in addition to the air compressor, also missing were two welders, a welding hood, some floor tile and some nail guns.  The case has been turned over to investigators.

Two Arrested on Shoplifting Charges

Some people are sneaky when they try to get away with shoplifting, but according to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department, two Summerville women walked out of Wal-Mart in Pennville recently with a buggy full of merchandise in plain sight without bothering to pay for the items.

This past Sunday a store associate at Wal-Mart observed the two women with a shopping cart full of items walk past the checkout lines and to the parking lot.  The women were detained by the associate until law enforcement arrived.

Twenty-four year old Sasha Michelle Scott of a Seventh Street address in Summerville and twenty-four year old Leslie Ann Hudgins of an Oak Street address in Summerville were arrested on shoplifting charges. 

According to Wal-Mart the women attempted to shoplift $174.35 worth of merchandise.
