Mrs. Bessie Irene Allen Obit (C)

Mrs. Bessie Irene Allen, age 90, of Summerville, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Allen was born in Gaylesville, Alabama on August 23, 1923, daughter of the late William Harbin Coker and Cora Kate Kennedy Coker. She was member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, and the Quarter Century Club. Mrs. Allen was an avid reader and was employed with Riegel/Mt. Vernon Mills for over 49 years, spending most of that time as a secretary in the bleaching department of the finishing plant. Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband, “Jim Allen”; sisters, Ophelia Chestnut, Louise Pearce, Pauline Hix, and Kathryn Payne; brothers, Fred Coker and Kennedy Coker.

Mrs. Allen is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Scott Bell of Summerville; sons and daughter-in-law, Tim and Nancy Allen of Casselberry, FL and Neal Fulton of Calhoun, GA; daughter-in-law, Cindy Fulton of Trion; brother, Billy Coker of Rome; Long-time Friend, Iris Plummer; grandchildren, Ryan Smith, Dee Fulton, Allyson Smith, Clint Bell, Scott Fulton, and Stephanie Fulton Cromer (Cody); great grandchildren, Jackson Herod and CJ Cromer; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment Services will be held Monday, February 3, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Green Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Waydell Howell officiating.

Pallbearers will be Eugene Cordell, Dee Fulton, Scott Fulton, Clint Bell, Ryan Smith and Cody Cromer.

According to the wishes of Mrs. Allen, there will be no visitation.

The family respectfully asks that no flowers be sent, however those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Horizon Baptist Fellowship or to the Chattooga County Library.

Mrs. Betty Diane Leonard Obit (ER)

MRS. BETTY DIANE LEONARD, age 58, of Shinbone Valley Road-Menlo, Georgia passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014, in a Rome hospital. Born in Trion, Georgia, She was a daughter of the late John C. Bandy and Betty June Green Bandy Pope who survives. She was a member of Chelsea Baptist Church and employed in the knitting department of Best Mfg. Company. Mrs. Leonard was preceded in death by a brother, the late John Duel Bandy.

Surviving are husband-Jimmy Leonard; mother and step father-Betty and Wayne Pope of Menlo; daughter-Connie Geimer of Centre, AL.; son-Jams Michael Leonard of Menlo; SPECIAL FRIEND-BECKY GABLE; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1st, at 2:30 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, interment in Bandy Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Friday from 6 until 8 P.M.

Mr. David Dwight Stancil Obit (M)

Mr. David Dwight Stancil, 68, of Douglasville, GA died Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in Austell, GA.

Mr. Stancil was born August 18, 1945 in Rhinehart, AL, the son of the late Chester Lee Stancil and Flora Bradley Stancil. He was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church. Mr. Stancil was retired from Anasteel, where he was employed as a truck drive. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Donald Stancil and Lisa Stancil; six brothers, and one sister.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Stancil; daughter and son-in-law, Melisa Singley and Dwayne Hubbs; sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Annette Stancil, Wayne and Shirley Stancil, and Shane Singley; 8 Grandchildren; and 4 Great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Summy and Rev. Kevin Harris officiating. Burial will follow in Needmore Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Travis Stancil, Michael Lee Stancil, Michael Singley, Marshall Singley, Joseph Maney, and Billy Piepmeier. Honorary pallbearers will be Leon and Shirley Casteel, and Billy and Mary Murphy.

Mr. Stancil will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 8:00 p. m. Friday.

Unemployment Up in Northwest Georgia

The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the unemployment rate in the Northwest Georgia region increased to 7.2 percent in December, up two-tenths of a percentage point from 7.0 percent in November. The rate was 8.8 percent in December a year ago.

The rate rose primarily because the number of new layoffs, represented by initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits, increased to 10,961, up by 7,455, or 212.6 percent, from 3,506 in November. Claims increased in several sectors, including manufacturing, construction, administrative and support services, trade, transportation, and social assistance, health care and social assistance, along with accommodations and food services. There were 6,220 claims in December 2012.

Metro Athens had the lowest area jobless rate at 5.2 percent, while the Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest at 10.2 percent.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December was 7.4 percent, down from 7.6 percent in November. The rate was 8.7 percent in December a year ago. 

Armed Robbery in LaFayette

LAFAYETTE POLICE REPORT AN ARMED ROBBERY… WHICH AMOUNTS TO AN EMPLOYEE MUGGING BEHIND A LOCAL CONVENIENCE STORE. IT HAPPENED AT CLOSING… JUST PAST MIDNIGHT SATURDAY… AT THE PIT STOP ON EAST VILLANOW AT THE BYPASS.

PRAGNESH PATEL WAS ASSISTING WITH THE STORE CLOSING… AND CARRIED TRASH TO THE DUMPSTER AT THE REAR OF THE STORE. HE TOLD POLICE HE WAS HIT FROM BEHIND AND KNOCKED TO THE GROUND. THE ASSAILANT TOOK HIS WALLET AND A GOLD RING… TOTAL VALUE AROUND $1,500. PATEL WAS NOT SURE WHAT WAS USED TO STRIKE HIM.

THE MAN WAS DESCRIBED AS 6 FEET OR TALLER AND HEAVY-SET… WEARING DARK GLOVES AND A DARK JACKET. HE ESCAPED ON FOOT.

POLICE HAVE FEW LEADS IN THIS ASSAULT… AND ASK THE PUBLIC FOR ANY INFORMATION THEY MAY HAVE, AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

Georgia Department of Labor Reopens Today

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) offices that have been closed because of the winter storm will reopen tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 31. The operating hours will vary according to conditions in their respective locations.

The GDOL central office complex at 148 Andrew Young International Blvd, N.E. and Courtland Ave. in Atlanta will resume normal operating hours of 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

GDOL Career Centers throughout the state will open according to the following schedules.

Opening at 8 a.m. are: Albany, Americus, Athens, Augusta, Bainbridge, Brunswick, Cairo, Columbus, Cordele, Covington, Dalton, Douglas, Dublin, Eastman, Gainesville, Gwinnett County (Norcross, Beaver Ruin Road), Habersham (Clayton), Hinesville, Houston County (Warner Robins), Jesup, Kingsbay, Macon, Milledgeville, Moultrie, Newnan, Savannah, Statesboro, Thomasville, Thomson, Tifton, Toccoa, Valdosta, Vidalia, and Waycross.

The North Metro Career Center on Druid Hills Road in Atlanta will open at 9 a.m.

Opening at 10 a.m. are: Cedartown, Clayton County (Jonesboro), Cobb-Cherokee (Marietta), DeKalb County (Decatur, Covington Highway), Griffin, LaFayette, LaGrange, Rome, South Metro (Atlanta, Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard).

Career centers in Carrollton and Cartersville will open at 12 noon.

The Blue Ridge Career Center will be closed for repairs to damage caused by the winter storm.

Monday, Feb, 3, all GDOL career centers will resume their normal operating schedules of Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
