Most roads in Chattooga County are passable today, but there are a few trouble spots. Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters said that Silver Hill Road will be closed today. A tree is down on top of Silver Hill blocking through traffic. Residents can still access Highway 27 and Highway 100, however no traffic can get over the hill. Also, Haywood Valley is a problem spot. Due to the shaded areas not a lot of ice and snow is expected to melt off the roadways in that area. Secondary roads on the mountain at Cloudland are passable, but there are a lot of icy patches that remain.
Highway 100 in Chattooga County is passable with a few icy patches, however when you get into Floyd County the road gets worse. Highway 27 and Taylors Ridge is in good shape, but when you get to Floyd County icy conditions are being reported; especially from Mt. Berry Square Mall to the Harbin Clinic area. Rockmart Highway in Floyd County is considered extremely dangerous. Many city streets in Rome are still ice covered as well. Travel in Floyd County is not recommended.
Alabama authorities say that all roads in Cherokee Count are passable; however, they advise no travel because of continued icy conditions. DeKalb County Alabama also is reporting patches of ice and some problems on secondary roads.
Summerville City Manager Russell Thompson says all city streets are in good shape this morning. There was a fire plug that broke earlier this morning on Lyerly Street causing some problems. Thompson asked that residents use caution on the city sidewalks. Many of the sidewalks still have icy patches. The city is working to spread sand and salt on the sidewalks today.
Habitat for Humanity is looking to reactivate it's ministry here in Chattooga County.
