Alongside the Georgia Highlands College Foundation, the leadership team at GHC has created a new scholarship to help students pay for college. The new “Ready to Start” scholarship is for any student who falls a few hundred dollars short of paying after financial aid and other scholarships have been applied.
Gwinnett County police have arrested and charged a Georgia State University campus police officer with rape and kidnapping after a Lawrenceville woman came forward and reported the August 5th incident.

A Menlo man was arrested in LaFayette last week after police performed a traffic stop. According to reports, LaFayette Police stopped a vehicle on West Main Street after they noticed that the driver of the vehicle was not wearing a seat belt. While conducting the traffic stop, a K-9 indicated the presence of drugs inside the vehicle. After performing a search of the car, police found a plastic baggie that contained suspected methamphetamine. Police arrested thirty-nine-year-old Jamie Lee Culbert of Menlo, who was booked into the Walker County Jail.
No date has been set for the beginning of construction on a bridge on Highway 48 that spans Raccoon Creek between Summerville and Menlo. The bridge is going to cost almost $5 million, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The winning bid for the bridge was submitted by C.W. Matthews Contracting Company at $4,969,065. The bridge will be replaced and according to the DOT, will also “include upgrades to the approaches of the bridge”. According to the bid proposal from the state, the bridge must be completed by April 30, 2024. The DOT says that an on-site detour will be set up during the construction, which is expected to last for 18 months.
