On Sunday December 18th Habitat for Humanity – Coosa Valley dedicated their 58th home in North Rome. Surrounded by friends and family the Bowers family accepted keys to their forever home. The Coosa Valley Chapter of Habitat for Humanity serves Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties.
The Georgia State Patrol Post has released a preliminary report on a fatal crash that took the life of a twenty-three-year-old man in Chattooga County.
The Georgia Department of Community Affairs partners with communities on economic development, local government assistance, and safe and affordable housing initiatives. Recently, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced Al Hodge as the representative for the 14th Congressional District to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs board of directors. The district includes Chattooga and surrounding counties. Hodge is the former CEO and President of the Rome-Floyd Chamber of Commerce and is currently president and CEO of Hodge Consulting Services, LLC, and has more than 40 years of economic and community development experience.
The Salvation Army in Rome was able to provide Christmas for hundreds of people if Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties. The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program serves children and senior adults each year. Applications are accepted for the program and then donors make sure that each one of the people on the Angel Tree Program list receives what they need for Christmas. This year, the Rome Salvation Army was able to provide 437 Angel Trees, according to Captain Paula Blevins. Captain Blevins said, “We really want to thank the Rome Braves for letting us use their stadium to deliver the presents.”
Georgia Power customers who were hoping the Georgia Public Service Commission would deny Georgia Power’s request for a 12% rate increase did not get any good news last week. Georgia’s Public Service Commission voted to allow the rate increase – and Georgia Power isn’t through asking for more money.
Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Tim Ward is leaving his post to join the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles. Ward will be replacing Brian Owen on the board of pardons and paroles. Owen is retiring on January 1, 2023. Governor Brian Kemp made the announcement last week that current Juvenile Justice Commissioner Tyrone Oliver will be the new state corrections commissioner starting January 1, 2023. Current Juvenile Justice Assistant Commissioner Shawanda Reynolds-Cobb will step up to take over the top job at the department of juvenile justice.

Trion firefighters along with assistance from Summerville Fire Department responded to the report of a residential structure fire on Elm Street in Trion overnight. A caller advised the ceiling was on fire when Engine 12-R went en-route. Firefighters quickly had the scene under control. The Trion Fire Department posted, “Please keep this family in your prayers as they have been displaced from their home on Christmas Eve. As our firefighters head back home to be with their families on this Christmas morning after spending most of Christmas Eve responding to 5 different emergencies, let your prayers be with them also.”
