On Saturday, February 25th, the Democratic Party of Chattooga County hosted the second annual Black History Month “Celebration of Our Heritage in Song and Poem.” The event featured local talent including gospel singers, original and classic African-American poetry readings, speeches and essays from schoolchildren on important civil rights leaders. Attendees enjoyed a meal prepared by the Spirit and Truth of Jesus Christ Church congregation and Democratic Party members. Community leaders were recognized with awards. These included: (l-r) Larry Anthony – Community Spirit Award, Pam Albert – Community Service Award, and Jeaneal Johnson, Community Artist Award.

Summerville Police were called to a Y Street address last week in response to a theft of services call. When police arrived on the scene and spoke with the complainant, she told them that someone had run a drop cord from an outlet at her residence to an abandoned mobile home. However, on further investigation, police found that someone had run the drop cord underneath a vehicle and a reciprocating saw was plugged in. Police found where the thief had began cutting the catalytic converter off a vehicle, but had not successfully removed the converter from the vehicle. Also there was a battery stolen from a generator at the residence. The incident was turned over to an investigator.
Georgia gas prices continues to decline at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $3.15 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 7 cents less than a week ago, 23 cents less than a month ago, and 34 cents less than this time last year. It now costs $47.25 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are now paying at least $3.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to last month.
Georgia’s forest industry continues to propel the state’s economy, according to a new report from Georgia Tech. Statistics just released for 2021 show total revenue generated by forestry was $24.6 billion, up 5.1% from the previous year. Figures calculated by The Enterprise Innovation Institute at the Georgia Institute of Technology are documented in the “2021 Economic Benefits of the Forest Industry in Georgia” report and support the state’s standing as the #1 Forestry State in the Nation.
Legislation exempting most rural hospitals from Georgia’s certificate of need law cleared the state Senate Monday. Senators voted 42-13 to no longer require proposed new acute-care hospitals in counties with populations of fewer than 50,000 residents to have to prove to the state that the medical services they plan to offer are needed in their community. The legislation requires rural hospitals exempted from the CON law to accept both Medicare and Medicaid enrollees and dedicate at least 10% of their incomes to indigent care. There is a second bill in the Georgia Senate that would do away CON rules for all hospitals.
