The company that Chattooga County hired to help with property tax assessments was in Chattooga County on Wednesday to talk with the local board of assessors. GMASS was paid $65,000 by the county, but now it appears that many of the property tax assessments are incorrect. There have been over 3,100 property tax assessment appeals and just how all those appeals will be handled remains to be seen. The county’s tax digest can’t be approved until 92% of the appeals have been heard. The deadline for the county’s tax digest is tomorrow, but Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that she was able to get an extension for the county until October 1st. All of this could mean that the final date 2023 property taxes are due in Chattooga County could be in 2024.
Chattooga County government relies on property tax to fund county operations. Normally, taxes are collected on December 1st, but that won’t be the case this year.
