A twenty-four-year-old Trion man was arrested last week in Summerville on disorderly conduct charges after he reportedly struck another person’s vehicle with his fists. Summerville Police say that Alec Michael-Shane Dodd was arrested near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Commerce Street, after he got out of a vehicle and began hitting another person’s vehicle in the roadway. Dodd was booked into the Chattooga County Jail on Thursday of last week.

Over the past two weeks, there have been almost 10,000 new COVID-19 cases reported statewide in Georgia. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, the EG.5 or “ERIS,” is the dominant COVID variant spreading in the U.S. right now. It is responsible for about 17% of new COVID cases in the country, and about 16% of new cases in Georgia so far. “ERIS” has early depictions that indicate it could be more easily transmissible than some other variants, but is not resulting in as many deaths as earlier strains of the virus. In Chattooga County, there have been 56 new COVID-19 cases over the past two weeks, according to numbers released this past week by the Georgia Department of Public Health. The overall COVID numbers remain relatively low and health professionals do not foresee another massive surge in cases soon. But they say COVID is being treated like the flu.
The statewide archery deer hunting season begins Saturday, Sept. 9, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).
The Chattooga Young Farmers have announced their September meeting that will be held on Thursday of this week. Carla Howard with Helping Hands Ending Hunger will be the guest speaker. There will be a hamburger and hotdog supper with donations for the meal going to Helping Hands Ending Hunger of Chattooga County. Every Sunday during the month of October, the Friends of Cloudland Canyon State Park will be hosting FREE hayrides at the park. Attendees can enjoy the hayrides from Noon until 5 PM. Enjoy a tractor-pulled hayride through the park and fun family games and activities. Remember, there is a $5 vehicle parking fee at Georgia State Parks. Donations to the Friends of Cloudland Canyon State Park will be accepted.
Old Fashioned Day Sunday Dinner is coming to the historic Summerville Depot next month. The City of Summerville will host the event with Sunday dinner served by Jim’s Restaurant from 11 AM until 2:30 PM. The cost is $7.25 for a meat and 2 vegetables or $6.45 for a 3 vegetable plate. Drinks will be $2 and dessert for $2.50. There will be indoor and outdoor seating and the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Train will arrive at 1 PM. Live Bluegrass and Gospel music will be provided by Low Down Revival. The event is scheduled for Sunday, October 15th.
The Georgia-based Home Depot Foundation is committing up to $250,000 to support immediate disaster relief and long-term recovery efforts in communities impacted by Hurricane Idalia. This new disaster response grant takes the Foundation’s disaster commitment to more than $6 million this year.
