The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) will place 60 full-time literacy coaches in elementary schools throughout the state, focusing on the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced on Thursday.
This week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced that SOLARCYCLE, an advanced technology-based solar recycling company, will create more than 600 new full-time jobs in Polk County, investing an estimated $344 million in a solar glass manufacturing facility in Cedartown. The facility will be the first of its kind in the country to use recycled materials from retired solar panels to make new solar glass.

A thirty-six-year-old Trion man is facing felony murder charges in connection with the shooting death of forty-four-year-old Nathaniel James Pease of an Old Highway 27 address. Reports indicate that Pease and the suspect, Dakota Dodd, had been in an ongoing domestic argument at the time of the shooting. Dodd surrendered himself to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader around 2 AM on Valentine’s Day morning after the shooting on Tuesday night. He was booked into the Chattooga County Jail on the felony murder charges as well as charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI continue to investigate the incident.
Grading work began this week on the new Zaxby’s location that is being built at the Hurley Crossing Shopping Center just north of Summerville on Highway 27. The new Zaxby’s is across Highway 27 from the recently opened Waffle House. Zaxby’s is a Georgia-based fast food chain that has spread across the South in recent years. The restaurant chain currently operates locations in 19 states.
