County Government Department Meeting This Morning

A meeting of Chattooga County governmental departments will be held this morning to give the public updates on current and upcoming projects and discuss events over the past month.  The meeting will be held from 10 AM until 11 AM at the Chattooga County Civic Center, located at 44 Highway 48 in Summerville. During these sessions, department heads from various sectors such as Public Works, Water District, Code Enforcement, EMA 911, and the Clerk’s office, along with the Commissioner. Each department will present comprehensive reports and expertly address any questions or concerns raised by members of the public.  Anyone with questions, can contact the commissioner’s office at 706-857-0700.

Georgia Gas Prices Hold Steady

Georgia gas prices remain steady at the pump compared to a week ago. Drivers are paying an average price of $3.35 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was the same as a week ago, is 22 cents more than a month ago, and 13 cents more than this time last year. It costs drivers an average of $50.25 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying almost $2.00 more to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.

Menlo Man Arrested In Summerville On Drug Charges

A thirty-two-year-old Menlo man was arrested by Summerville Police after a traffic stop earlier this month.  According to a report released yesterday by the police department, an officer on patrol on Scoggins Street on March 15th,  stopped a vehicle for not having tag lights.  While speaking to the driver, identified as Cody Ray Harmon, the officer noticed that the driver was very nervous and would not look at the officer.  Suspecting impairment, the officer received consent to search the vehicle and found suspected methamphetamine and a marijuana grinder inside the car.  Harmon was arrested on drug charges and driving under the influence of drugs and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Senator Moore Presents Resolution Honoring Laken Hope Riley

State Senator Colton Moore, who represents Chattooga and surrounding counties in the Georgia State Senate, presented a resolution last week on the floor of the senate to honor the life of Laken Hope Riley, the UGA Nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant.  Senator Moore said that Riley “had a heart for caring for others” and that he hopes that Riley’s legacy will live on.  Moore said the he also hopes the state senate will “recognize the need for legislation to prevent such tragedies from happening again”.  You can read Senator Moore’s complete comments below:

Jenith Crane Plunkett Lowrance, Obit (M)

Mrs. Jenith Crane Plunkett Lowrance, age 72, of Trion, GA, died Sunday, March 24, 2024, at her residence.

Mrs. Lowrance was born July 6, 1951, in Trion, GA, daughter of the late Harvey N. Plunkett and Velma Crane Plunkett. She attended Pleasant Grove Church of Christ, and prior to her retirement, was employed at Hays State Prison. Mrs. Lowrance loved spending time with her grandkids and enjoyed taking people to church. She also loved all things purple and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Levon Lowrance.

Survivors include her sons, William Shane Lowrance, Wade (Veronica) Lowrance; grandchildren, Marcos Lowrance, Kaylynn Lowrance, and Haley Lowrance.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 27, 2024, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Min. Hugh Glaze, Min. Barry Grinder, and Min. Tyler Gilreath officiating. Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Marcos Lowrance, Jason Kellett, Kim Logan, Ron Hopkins, Ken Anderson, Mark Gilbreath, and Dennis Murdock. Honorary pallbearers will be John Gilbreath and Levi Gilbreath.

Mrs. Lowrance will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Wednesday.
