Georgia drivers are seeing a slight reprieve at the pump this week, with average gas prices declining marginally compared to last week. Georgians are currently paying an average of $2.99 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, though this price is subject to change.
Joey Thomas Ford, 27, of Rome, Georgia, was sentenced to prison in Chattooga County Superior Court after pleading guilty recently in Chattooga County Superior Court to multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor. The charges included child molestation, sexual battery against a child under 16 years old, and first-degree cruelty to children. Ford received a sentence of six years and six months in prison, followed by 13 years and six months of probation. He was also ordered to pay a fine of $1,716. According to arrest records, Ford pleaded guilty to molesting a juvenile female in August of last year. Court documents reveal that on August 25th, Ford had inappropriately touched and fondled the female victim. The incident occurred at a residence on Oak Street in Summerville.
The annual Black History Month Celebration sponsored by the Chattooga County Democratic Party drew a large crowd to the Civic Center on Saturday, February 22. Emceed and coordinated by Pam Albert, the event, titled “Celebrating Our Heritage Through Poem and Song,” featured local talent and recognized civic leaders for their contributions.

The Town of Trion is celebrating a major victory after securing a $75,000 grant from the Atlanta United Community Fund (AUCF) to build a brand-new soccer mini-pitch at the Trion Parks & Recreation Center. Trion was one of only ten recipients of the prestigious grant, a testament to the town’s commitment to providing recreational opportunities for its residents. The funding will be doubled thanks to the generous AtriumHealth Foundation, which is matching the AUCF grant, bringing the total project budget to $150,000.

Mr. Devon Shane McGuire, age 27, of Trion, GA, died Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Atrium Health Floyd.
Mr. McGuire was born April 8, 1997, in Rome, GA, son of Mark Shane McGuire and Lisa Michelle Wilson. He was of the Baptist Faith and had been employed with Southern Machine Fabrication.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Sherlene Carroll; grandfather, Mark McGuire; and great-aunts, Debbie Lowry, Kathy Landin, and Melissa McCollum.
Survivors include his parents, Mark Shane McGuire and Lisa Michelle Wilson; girlfriend, Bethanie Swanner; son, Cash’Lee Devon Shane Swanner; brothers, Jacob L. (Brooklyn) McGuire, Justin C. Carroll, Kovi A. (Cheyene) Wilson, and Dylan Ward; sisters, Brooklyn G. Wilson (Jonathan A. Collins), Jaycee A. Carroll (Chris Lopez), Alexis B. Carroll (Shaq Calhoun), Kayla A. Carroll (Kendrick Fife); and grandmother, Annette Bing.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 26, 2025, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Shaver officiating. Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dylan Ward, Cliff Dixon, Yandell Ratliff, Jacob L. McGuire, Blake Stricklin, Chase Browning, Juice Wilson, and Clarence C. Mr. McGuire will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Wednesday.
