Students from across Chattooga County came together for a day of service, raising nearly $2,000 to support the local animal shelter while also volunteering their time.
As part of the statewide #LiveToServe initiative, inspired by 2026 Georgia Teacher of the Year and agriculture educator Rachel Kinsaul, members of the Summerville Middle School FFA, Chattooga High School FFA, and Menlo FFA chapters participated in a community service project aimed at giving back locally.
Through a friendly “penny war” fundraiser, students collected donations totaling $1,996.14, which will go toward providing new beds for animals at the Chattooga County Animal Control Shelter.
Following the fundraiser, FFA members visited the shelter, where they assisted with various tasks and spent time with adoptable dogs and cats. Students also received a behind-the-scenes look at shelter operations and learned more about the importance of pet adoption.
Shelter Director Charlie Long hosted the group and shared insights into the daily responsibilities of running the facility, as well as the ongoing need for community support.
Organizers say the project not only raised funds but also helped students better understand animal welfare and the impact of service within their own community.
