Chattooga County Animal Control Director Charlie Long is thanking Hays State Prison and Acting Warden Gabriel Illa for continuing a dog training program that benefits animals from the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.
Dog lovers will want to mark their calendars for next Saturday, August 15, when Downtown Dog Daze returns to Summerville for a day dedicated to four-legged friends and the people who love them.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Summerville Train Depot and along East Washington Street.
Downtown Dog Daze will feature a variety of activities and services for dogs and their owners, including dog adoption opportunities through the Chattooga County Animal Shelter, a photo booth, dog grooming by Bishop’s Dog Grooming, a Pup Cup Station, vendors offering dog products, arts and crafts, food, and a kiddie pool cooling station sponsored by Mr. Pickles Dog Bakery.
Free rabies, DHPP and Bordetella vaccinations will also be offered, sponsored by HSNEGA in partnership with the Chattooga County Animal Shelter.
One of the highlights of the day will be the Pup Strut at noon.
Visitors can also look forward to the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum steam engine passenger train during the event.
Downtown Dog Daze is presented by the City of Summerville, Mr. Pickles Dog Bakery LLC and Bishop Grooming.
The Summerville Train Depot is located at 111 East Washington Street.

Shelter staff say their feline residents go through a large amount of litter every day, and donations help keep the animals comfortable, healthy, and happy while they wait to find their forever homes.
Anyone wishing to help can drop off cat litter donations at the Chattooga County Animal Shelter, located at 464 Red Oak Drive in Summerville. The shelter is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with Wednesday visits available by appointment.

The Friends of the Chattooga County Animal Shelter is asking for the public’s help after announcing the shelter has reached full capacity and is in urgent need of adopters, foster families, and rescue organizations.
The Chattooga County Animal Shelter is asking for the community’s help by donating two items that are always in high demand: cat litter and Dawn dish soap. Shelter officials say even small donations can make a big difference in caring for the dogs and cats housed at the facility.
Cat litter is used daily for the shelter’s feline residents, while Dawn dish soap is an important cleaning supply used to bathe animals and clean food and water bowls, kennels, and other equipment. The shelter says these items are used quickly as staff care for stray, abandoned, and surrendered animals from across Chattooga County. The shelter has made similar appeals in the past during periods of increased intake and kitten season.

The Walker County Animal Shelter has reopened after completing a 30-day quarantine that began when a litter of surrendered puppies tested positive for canine distemper virus, or CDV.
Shelter officials announced that the facility resumed normal operations on June 24 after all cleaning and quarantine protocols were completed. Sadly, all eight puppies in the affected litter died from the highly contagious virus. Officials said no other animals at the shelter became ill during the quarantine period.
Canine distemper is an airborne virus that spreads easily among dogs. Because the Walker County Animal Shelter has an open-concept design and does not have adequate facilities to fully isolate exposed animals, officials determined that a complete shutdown of the shelter was necessary to prevent the virus from spreading.
During the month-long closure, shelter staff conducted an extensive deep cleaning of the facility, disinfecting equipment as well as all entry and exit points.
The shelter currently has more than 60 dogs and cats available for adoption. Staff members have also been working through a backlog of stray animals and owner surrenders that accumulated during the quarantine.
The Walker County Animal Shelter is located at 5488 North Marble Top Road near Chickamauga and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
