A 20-year-old man was arrested on multiple charges following a traffic stop in Trion after deputies reported seeing a vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the roadway.

According to an incident report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew William Hawkins, 20, was arrested July 31 after deputies were dispatched to assist a Trion Police officer with a traffic stop near a driveway on Highway 27.

The report states that the officer had observed Hawkins’ vehicle cross the centerline several times before initiating the stop.

Deputies reported that Hawkins showed signs of possible impairment and admitted to drinking alcoholic beverages earlier in the evening. According to the report, Hawkins also acknowledged using THC while driving.

During a search of the vehicle, officers reported finding open containers of alcohol, including beer and liquor. Deputies also reported finding a THC vape.

Hawkins was taken to the Chattooga County Jail and charged with DUI involving multiple substances, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, two counts of open container, defective equipment, possession of tobacco products under the age of 21, possession of alcohol under the age of 21, and consumption of alcohol under the age of 21.
