A community that has been served for decades by Gaylesville Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Bobby Millican and his family is being asked to rally around them as they face a difficult period involving serious health challenges and mounting expenses.

A benefit for the Millican family will be held Saturday, August 29, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Alabama time at Gaylesville First Baptist Church.

Bobby has served with the Gaylesville Fire & Rescue Volunteer Fire Department for more than 30 years, spending many of those years as fire chief. During that time, he has responded to fires, vehicle accidents, emergencies and countless calls for assistance throughout Gaylesville and the surrounding area.

His wife, Susan, has served alongside him with the fire department for more than 25 years. She has also devoted considerable time to operating the local food bank and helping with food distributions for families in need.

Now, after decades of helping others, the family is facing a call for help of its own.

According to family members, Bobby suffered a stroke in February 2025, beginning what has been a particularly difficult year and a half for the family. A couple of weeks ago, his health challenges resulted in the amputation of his leg.

The family says the procedure has brought a new period of recovery and adjustment along with additional expenses. Bobby had been the family’s primary breadwinner before becoming unable to work.

Susan, who is disabled, returned to work to help support the family while continuing to care for Bobby and their adult son, Cody, who has autism and depends on his parents. She has also continued her community service through local food assistance efforts.

Friends and family are now hoping the community Bobby and Susan have served for so many years will turn out to support them.

The August 29 benefit will feature food and gospel music, with families encouraged to attend, make a donation if they are able and show their support for the Millican family.

Organizers are also asking the community to keep Bobby, Susan and Cody in their prayers as they navigate the months ahead.
