A motorcycle crash at the intersection of Highland Avenue and Commerce Street led to a DUI charge early Friday morning, according to the Summerville Police Department.

A Summerville Police officer was dispatched to the area at approximately 12:28 a.m. on August 14 after a motorcycle struck a curb and sustained damage.

According to the incident report, a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office deputy was already at the scene and advised that the driver appeared to be uninjured but possibly intoxicated.

Police identified the driver as Eldon James Alexander. The report states Alexander was riding a black Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on Highland Avenue when he approached the Commerce Street intersection. Alexander told police that he looked to his left to check for traffic and struck the curb on the north side of Commerce Street.

The officer reported observing minor cosmetic damage to the motorcycle and no other property damage.

During the investigation, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Alexander reportedly told the officer that he had consumed two alcoholic beverages at a bar he had visited in Rome.

The officer also reported observing slurred speech and bloodshot eyes.

Alexander agreed to perform field sobriety tests, according to the report. Following those tests and other observations, the officer determined that Alexander was less safe to operate a motor vehicle due to the alleged influence of alcohol.

Alexander was placed under arrest and read Georgia’s implied consent notice for suspects age 21 or older. Police said he agreed to a blood draw and was transported to Atrium Station 12, where a paramedic administered the test.

Alexander was then transported to the Chattooga County Jail for processing and booking.

According to the Summerville Police Department report, Alexander was issued citations for driving under the influence of alcohol, less safe, and failure to maintain lane.

The motorcycle was later released to a family member who arrived at the scene.
