Summerville Police responded to a Martin Street residence after a homeowner reported an attempted burglary in which he armed himself and went outside to investigate.
According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, Officer Brandon Lindsey was dispatched to 985 Martin Street on August 14 and spoke with the complainant, Jacob Caldwell.
Caldwell told police he heard someone attempting to kick in his back door. According to the report, Caldwell armed himself with a personal firearm and went to investigate.
Caldwell told the officer that when he opened the back door, he saw an unknown individual fleeing into a wooded area behind the property. He was unable to provide police with a detailed physical description of the person.
During the investigation, Officer Lindsey reported finding disturbed grass and fresh foot traffic leading toward a set of concrete steps, which was consistent with the direction Caldwell said the individual fled.
Officer Campbell arrived to assist, and officers conducted a security sweep of the property and surrounding area. Police did not locate anyone during the search.
Caldwell told police he suspected the individual could be associated with an encampment located adjacent to his property.
Police reported damage to the home’s back door, with the bottom hinge visibly damaged.
No arrest was reported in connection with the incident at the time the report was filed.
