Trying to outrun police seems to be the thing in Lafayette, as yet another individual led law enforcement officials on a foot chase.

Lafayette Police responded to a report of a burglary, at a home on Steele Street, and arrived to find the homeowner claiming that a number of items had been stolen from a room which had been built on at the rear of her residence.

She also accused a man whom she said "stayed there from time to time" of taking the items, valued at around $700.00

That's when 30 year old Chris Denton ran from the home and managed to get away.

The following day, officers were dispatched to a report of a fight in progress, at the Langley Apartments on South Main – where they found Denton in the midst of a loud argument with 32 year old Benjamin Fuller,

Fuller told police that Denton had stolen his guitar from his mother's house the day before

Both men were charged with disorderly conduct and Denton was charged with felony theft.

Floyd County Police are reportedly looking into the possibility that bones recently found there might be the remains of a Rome man who was reported missing for some six years.

The bones were found in the woods near a dirt path off Kirby Road, at the edge of the Floyd County/Gordon County line.

A missing person report was filed by Dewayne Allen Robbins’ relatives in late July of 2009, but no leads turned up. Robbins’ minivan was later found in the area.

Robbins is described as a 39-year-old white male, approximately 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes.

His last known address was 807 Avenue B but he had been staying at The Salvation Army at the time he disappeared and was thought to be homeless.

A hunter found a human skull in the woods Nov. 6 near Kirby Road. Floyd County police say the skull was found along with a femur, and a shoe was nearby.

Authorities are still awaiting results of tests from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab.

Investigators have arrested a Coosa man for theft offenses that allege he has been recycling used checks and attempting to pass them at local retailers. Robert Nathan Holcomb, age 30, was arrested by police Wednesday night following a successful surveillance operation that

included a traffic stop of his vehicle at the East Rome Walmart, where he was found to be in possession of several counterfeit checks.

The Floyd County Police Department was initially contacted by Walmart regarding the suspicious checks that began appearing a few weeks ago.

Holcomb has purchased at least $1,500 worth of merchandise from local Walmart stores but has possibly visited other retailers. The man buys items from the stores with the bad checks and then returns with a receipt to get cash back from refunds.

Investigators hope to find other merchants who recognize the man, or have had checks returned by the bank.

Incidents of “check washing” have fallen off and aren’t seen as commonly as in the past, but on occasion they will appear in stores. Depending on the confidence in which a checks is passed, a clerk sometimes will accept the check for payment – only to discover several weeks later that the bank has rejected the financial instrument.

Check washing occurs when print is removed from a check face, allowing a person to alter portions of the document.

Holcomb has been charged with first degree burglary, deposit account fraud, theft by taking, theft by deception and fourth degree forgery.

Two people were arrested at a Martha Berry Boulevard motel on drug charges late Tuesday night. According to Floyd County Jail reports, police found methamphetamine inside a room at the Relax Inn. 

Police arrested both 43 year old Centre resident Roscoe LeScott Covington, and 35 year old Yolanda Lynn Peace, who resided in the room, with possession of methamphetamine.

Peace was additionally charged with possession of drug related objects.

Covington was also charged with possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Police also said Covington is also wanted in Alabama for possession of dangerous drugs.
